unable to connect to wireless network...

Last night my laptop battery went dead ( Inspiron 8600) and in the process I lost my wireless connection. When I started the computer again this time with the power adapter I was unable to reconnect to the internet. For the last 24 hours I have been searching for the solution as to why I keep getting this message," unable to connect to preferred wireless network"
Also. when I go to the network connection page I get this," make sure the wireless switch is on" where can I find that wireless switch to turn on the wireless network?
Currently I am using my friend's Dell latop and both our computers are set up with wireless router from Netgear. Her computer still operates with the router but mine just one room away has broken down. Another popup with say" network cable unplugged" but how? We use the same wireless network.

I have Windows XP,

Any suggestions, or directions would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

thanks my friend for the prompt response. I have resolved my wireless problem. I found that the solution lay within my freind's computer since she is the Netgear administrator. When my battery died it appeared to trip my connection so when I went into her sharing wireless page I found that my connection was off so I checked the box and there it was "internet connection.

So Chris my friend I thank you for the link you sent. I will explore some of the many issues that arise with a wireless network.

It's good to know that help is just a keyboard away.

bye..
