Question

As Norton is not part of Windows, this should be posted on the Software - Other forum. Simply uninstall the program in the Add/Remove programs section of the Control panel. Symantec also has an uninstall tool on their site, I THINK that '03 works with it, '04 and more recent does not. But you only use the tool IF the uninstall doesn't work.

You have '03. It's 2005, so your software is outdated and the 90 day period has long expired. When you reinstall it, you will get the same period that you currently have, it will not give you a new period. You should consider buying a brand new copy of NAV or Norton Internet Security ($20 this week after rebates).

Actually you can use the Norton manual uninstall routine requiring a registry edit with Norton AV 2003 (I used it on my D8300). And, I'm currently running Norton AV 2003 on my XPS Gen 3  system and can attest to the fact this version accepts the virus definition and program updates. The only drawback to running the 2003 version is Norton no longer provides support for it.

Norton 2004 and Norton 2005 provide functionality that is NOT included in 2003 even with updates.

Not to be argumentative, but specifically what functionalities are not avialable with NAV 2003 that has all current program updates? Other than a different icon on the task bar, there is no difference I can discern between NAV 2003 and NAV 2005, including scanning options - and I have both apps. Symantec does provide the WMI update for NAV 2002,2003,2004 to facilitate compatibility with SP2's new Security Center:

Given that updating the definitions each year costs $20 or more, and getting a new verison is usually FREE, there is no reason NOT to update each year - we the CAVEAT that you wait about 90 days after the new version is out so they can remove the bugs.

I recommend my clients install Norton Internet Security which includes NAV and AntiSpam. This week it's $20 after rebates.

When I uninstalled it from my D8300 (to install in on my Gen 3 system - still had 3/4 of my subscription left..) I removed the entries in this order:

(3) Live Reg (Symantec Corporation)

(4)Live Update 1.80 (Symantec Corporation)

(1) Norton AntiVirus 2003

(2) Norton WMI Update

After doing so, in the event you have problems reinstalling it (assuming you will be reinstalling NAV 2003 and not the current version), I would suggest you follow the Symantec manual uninstall procedure and then try it again. As for the current NAV 2005 version should you decide to upgrade, the install routine automatically removes any previous version so you don't have to bother with Add/Remove, etc.

Sorry for the confusion. After you uninstall NAV 2003 via Add/Remove and then attempt to reinstall it again (as noted in your initial post that this what you wanted to do) but fails with error prompts and/or other problems, chances are there are still NAV file remnants remaining in the registry that are causing a conflict with the reinstall. That said, again, if you do run into an error/failed re-install, then do the manual NAV 2003 removal that will clean out the registry - and then retry installing it again. Hope this is clearer for you.
