If you still under warranty you can call Dell support and tell them you need the CD

 

And I think you can try the XP Pro CD... just give it a chance...

One site I found gave a link to download the boot disk for all xp versions, but when I ran the program, after requesting which drive to write the files to, it would just disappear.

 

Couldn't have come a worse time either. A week from finals.....

From where are you trying to download XP MCE??? When you select the location to download, select Drive C.

 

Then, what you downloaded burn it to a CD...

Yeah, that's what I meant to say. It was a site that had XP Pro boot disk files. You downloaded it to your computer, then burnt a boot disk with the program. It would ask for the drive you wanted the files sent to, the CD drive in my case, and the program would just quit after that. Oh well, I don't think it was very promising anyway.

 

I have an XP Pro installation disk from an old desktop but it isn't booting correctly either, for some reason.

 

I have no idea.

I haven't found MCE yet, only XP Pro and Home.

 

I've downloaded those to my desktop and had the problem with the program that is supposed to create the CD.

I'm not really sure uf you can download from a public place the WinMCE from a site, In my case, I get them from MSDN, but because a subscription.

 

I don't know what application you're talking about, when you try to download it you try to save it directly to a CD, I think that's not posible, you have to save it to your HDD and then burn it to a CD.

 

But if you wanna know what software you can use to download things try BitComet to download torrent and to look for them try isohunt website.

 

I think will be ok for you to download the MCE version, since what you need is only the image not a serial Key... You already have one with your PC

If your warranty already expired, you can contact the Spare Part department, and you can get the Cd I think for $10 - $20. You just call Dell and ask for that department, to purchase a XP CD.

 

Still the same suggestion, Use XP Pro Cd...

Any suggestions on why the XP Pro CD downloads aren't working though?

 

I run the program that is designed to load the files onto a CD, it asks for the drive that I want them to be stored to, I type one key and the program just disappears. I have no idea what is causing that.

 

Still looking for other download sites.....

Try to borrow an XP Pro installation CD, do none of your friends have one?

 

Then
Insert the XP installation disk and reboot
Run Setup and choose Recovery Console which is the first "R" you come to just after the copying of files.

At the command prompt type

chkdsk /r     
enter
