Upgrade from ME to XP (with SP2)
I am a photographer who wants to upgrade from Windows ME, that came with my Dell system, to XP. The motivation for my move is that the new Photoshop CS requires XP and will not install in the ME environment. Other than that I am not a heavy-duty computer-user and, in the spirit of if-it-ain't-broke-don't-fix-it, I'd probably stay with ME. There's a new XP service pack 2 that primarily closes security loopholes in XP. My questions are these:
1. What version of XP should I buy? Home version? Professional?
2. Is Dell (or anyone else) now selling Windows XP with the service pack already in the version on the CD? I am not eager to download (or even install from CD) the 220 megabyte service pack.
Earlier in the week I told a Dell sales person of my desired upgrade from ME to XP and asked about the inclusion of the service pack on the software CD. She sent me XP Home Edition that said "Version 2002" on the packaging. Obviously that was obsolete and did not include the service pack, though the sales person told me it would. Also the box said “For PCs without Windows or PCs with Windows 95 or earlier versions.� My Windows ME is a later version than Windows 95. So the sales person was totally non-responsive to my requests. Maybe someone here can tell me exactly what to ask for. Thanks.

1. What version of XP should I buy? Home version? Professional?  Unless you need the special features of XP Professional the Home Edition is the better choice. See this.

You should ask for a Windows XP Upgrade CD, which will include SP1, and which can be used to upgrade Windows versions 98 or later. I strongly urge you to do a clean install of XP, which you can do with an Upgrade CD, see this. Those who upgraded over ME have had serious problems which eventually required a clean install anyway. If you order SP2 on CD from here it won't matter what updates are installed, as SP2 contains all Critical Updates through its release date (including SP1).
