Upgrade question.

So, really, how bad would it be to upgrade XP to Vista vs. clean install? I know everyone makes it sound like its the end of the world if you can't do a clean install, but, for a student like myself, what specifically would be so bad with an upgrade?

Most of the people remember the bad upgrades from previous upgrades WinMe from Win98, Win98 from Win95 etc... These had some problems on some systems, and remember if there are any issues on the OS that is upgraded those issues will more than likely be brought over to the new OS.
 
Clean is easy, fast ( 20 minutes ) and less problematic.
 
Upgrade is a pain, takes more time to install ( 2 - 3 hours in some cases ), and can be very problematic.
 
But go ahead and let us know how it goes. :smileysad:

Also, if I were to do an upgrade, would the best bet be to clean install xp and upgrade from vista from there?

My problem is that I'm getting the express upgrade sometime and, even though you can apparently do a clean install with it, I don't want to do anything illegal but I also don't want to drop a lot of money on something I can get for $10.

Yes, if clean installing XP is an option for you, then upgrading, you should seriously consider it. That would probably cut down on any chance of problems.

There's no concrete answer to that. The problems can range from very minor issues (an error message here or there), to a complete system crash. If you're determined to (or have no choice but to) do the upgrade option, then go ahead. The results simply are unpredictable. Your upgrade might go through without a hitch.

Myself, I created a separate partition on my hard drive and clean installed Vista on it. I have both running great now.
