On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
Click the Advanced tab.
Under Browsing, click the Use inline AutoComplete for Web addresses check box, and then click OK.

Chik,

Thank you very much for your reply. I am back in business as far as the addressing goes.

I'm sorry for bumping up this very old thread, but I have this same problem with a new Dimension E510 (XP Media Center OS).  I've had the machine for about 3 days.  When I first got it, it was fine (type in www.whatever and it went there).  Suddenly, I must now type in "http://" in front of everything.  The inline Autofill checkbox is checked under Advanced settings.  Further, my Dell laptop does NOT have this checkbox checked and it works fine without having to type in the "http://".

I hit the 'reset web settings' button just in case I had inadvertently changed something but it did no good. It's an "Outlet" machine (refurbished) and has been giving me lots of other software-related trouble (locks up forcing a power-down).  I hope this isn't an indication of what the future holds for this thing.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Jim

turbojimmy,

Open the registry editor (Start|Run, type regedit and click OK. Navigate tp HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\DefaultPrefix. In the right pane the default valus should be of type REG_SZ and the value itself should be http://.

No - that's not it.  That registry entry says "http://"....any other ideas?  If I don't type in the "http://" the little flag in the top right just waves indefinitely.  No error message or anything.  I let it go all night last night and it was still waving in the morning.

Thanks,

Jim

I fixed it.  This was the problem:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165

A Microsoft security update doesn't play nice with the HP Share-to-web software.  This was causing most of the other weirdness I was experiencing, too.  I'm still having trouble with FileZilla (it hangs on the E510, but works fine on the laptop), but it does not appear related to the above conflict with HP software.

it may take an additional step or two to make the change stick...   I had to remove the check from the box to auto complete web addresses, apply the change, and then reboot.   After the restart I went back  and added the check to the box, applied the change and the feature was working again the next time I tried it...   I'm not positive, but I think the restart helped with this.
