USB Enhanced Multimedia Keyboard no driver ?

Question

I have been seeking a driver for this keyboard. The keyboard works but seeks a driver on startup, which is nothing short of painful. The USB Optical mouse is the same.   I have tried to solve but have been alarmingly unsuccessful.   Vista, XPS 710.   Keyboard SK-8135   Mouse OCJ339   Why it is seeking a driver I have no idea. Can this be stopped ?

HI,   I would like to know of the keyboard and mouse came with the system?   When it asks for the driver, just go ahead and click on install, it will search for the driver and then tell you to search online. Did you try that?

Yes the keyboard and mouse were delivered with the system. I have tried everything from allowing the system to search Microsoft automatically through to pointing to Folders on my desktop. The keyboard and mouse work, but it is most frustrating when restarting the system that it begins a search for a mouse driver and set of keyboard drivers that then requires intervention spanning about 10mins.   In Device Manager the keyboard is shown attached to a USB Port so it is recognised by the system.

Try changing the USB port on the computer--don't use hubs or peripherals like a monitor or a converter to PS2. Plug directly into a different usb port on the back of the computer. You might need to install the software for the keyboard. Dell puts their name on the KB, but they don't make them. It could be a Microsoft or Logitech KB. See if there is a name on the bottom.

Thanks for your input Mary G.   The KB has SK-8135 as its Model No. Dell is the only name on it. I am using a USB directly from the rear of the desktop (XPS 710, Vista). If I could find the driver I would be happy.

Hi Max,

Have you tried installing the driver from the Resource disk? if not then here are the steps.

Insert the Drivers and Utilities CD in the CD drive.
The message Welcome Dell System Owner appears.
Click the Next button.
Click to select your system from the System Model menu.
Click to select Windows Vista from the Operating System menu.
Click to select Drivers from the Topic menu.
A list of available keyboard drivers appears.
Click to select Dell Enhanced Performance USB Keyboard.
Scroll down then click the Extract button.
The Input:Enhanced Performance USB Keyboard Driver window appears.
Click the Continue button.
The message Select the folder where you want to unzip the files to appears.
Click the OK button.
A message appears asking if you want to create the folder.

NOTE: If a message appears asking to overwrite the folder, click the Yes to All button.

Click the Yes button.
The message All files were successfully unzipped appears.
Click the OK button.
The DellTouch Software Information and Installation window appears.
Scroll to the bottom of the document and click the Install Now button.
The message Would you like to open the file or save it to your computer? appears.
Click the Open button.
The message Welcome to the InstallShield Wizard for DellTouch appears.
Click the Next button.
The InstallShield Wizard complete window appears
Click to select Yes, I want to restart my computer now.
Remove the Drivers and Utilities CD from the CD drive.
Click the Finish button.
The system will restart.

Thanks,   I have my CD as you outlined but there is an absence of keyboard drivers. I also tried   'systems all' and XP but no drivers for the KBare apparent on the CD.

The SK-8135 is a USB plug and play device, no drivers needed or available.   There were drivers for the PS2 version of the SK-8135, but they will do no good for the USB model.   You might try this update rollup for USB from Microsoft.   http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941600

Have downloaded and installed the Microsoft Vista USB rollup. I still have the issue of seeking for drivers however. I restarted following installation and the system continued to seek driver software.   Is it to do with the setup of my USB drivers perhaps?

Hi Max,   Try the resource disk again, This time rather than choosing Drivers, choose all or applications and then check for the Keyboard software.

Thanks for the reply. I now understand there are no drivers, but the KB and Mouse are native to the OS(Vista). In terms of the CD referenced, I performed all the checks outlined several days ago.   The issue now is to negate the system looking for a driver for the mouse and keyboard. There must be a setting in the OS.   Max

I have a similar problem but just for the keyboard. I've noticed that there is now a unknown device under other devices showing in the device manager with a question mark on it.

My KB works without the hardware wizard pop up if plugged into front left USB port. In the device manager it shows up as more general HID device and USB controllers rather than Dell USB KB under both when swapped round.

In right front USB KB doesn't work and pop up happens and only new item in device manager is Dell USB KB under other devices with yellow ! mark on it.

Tried windows file checker http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936212 but passed.

I would like to know if you've solved the problem since last post.

keybords like mice should never be pluged into the front usb ports. They should always be in the back as this uses a different usb contoller.

Thanks for the reply. Could it be something to do with the USB hub controllers rather than the keyboard driver then. Plus is it going to cause trouble with the KB plugged into the front until the problem can be resolved ?

normally there are USB connectors that are for lack of a better term reserved for the keyboard and the mouse. i would recommend you try using the rear ports.

Just tried all 4 rear ports, the results in the order top row L&R, then bottom L&R looking form front, for the keyboard are :- works no hardware-wizard popup, works but HW popup, Doesn't work & HW popup, works no HW popup. For the mouse results are works, works, doesn't work & HW pu, doesn't work & HW pu. This was performed with a single device only at the time.

But with KB, mouse, screen hub, modem inserted in order given everything works with no extraneous messages and I realise that I had swapped the KB & mouse round recently when trying to sort another problem.

But I'd like to know if anyone else gets funny things happening when they swap round where things are plugged in.

Sorry if I seem a bit ignorant but this is our first modern computer so I have limited experiance.
