USB ext. backup error "cyclic redund. check" 80070017
Vista Home Prem with SP1, using ext. Western Dig. HD for backup. Has been running fine, but most recent backup failed with error message: Cyclic Redundancy Check 0x80070017
I ran a chkdsk /r on that drive and it was reported error free. Attempted backup yielded same error.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Also, some problems have been reported with SP1 and drives formatted with FAT. Make sure the backup drive is NTFS. All else fails and you want to remove SP1:

When I ran chkdsk on the external drive, I was surprised to see it was FAT. The backup facility is integral to Vista. The external drive was new and USB-attached to the Vista machine. I don't recall a separate formatting process -- I just plugged it in and ran the Vista backup.
In light of the system seeming to run OK, is there any reason to reformat the external HD to NTFS?
Curious,

I have the same problem, but the solution does not worl for me.
Using Ghost 12.0 in Windows Vista when I verify a restore point I get an Error.
Error ED800012: The internal structure of the image file (CRC check) is
invalid, damaged or unsupported.
I bought and installed Acronis True Image 11 Home backup software and get
"Archive is corrupted".
I have backed up to a WD external drive and to my D:\ drive and I get the same
failures.
I have done a chkdsk /v /r on my C: D: and external drives and this did not
help. All drives are NTFS.
What else can I do to try to fix this problem?
