very high ram usage

hi

so basically, my laptop has been using a lot of ram recently. i bought it like a month back because i needed it for school and the other laptop i have is a pavillion gaming with rtx so my dad didnt let me to bring it to school since i already lost my headphones at school.

ok so i have 8 chrome tabs open, 2 word documents open and 6.4GB of ram is being used. i once forgot the password of this laptop and i re installed windows using the shift + restart trick so if this is the reason then ill be sad.

the specs are:
i5 11th gen

8gb ram and i only used 1 slot

512 gb ssd

intel iris XE which has 4GB gpu memory

my pavillion has 16GB of ram and i did the same thing (8 chrome tabs + 2 word docs) + i opened minecraft and valo and it was using like 13gb/16gb

this cant even open minecraft alone with a few chrome tabs and words because of ram ;-;

1. Some applications, such as Google Chrome, are memory hogs. If it matters to you, you could find alternative apps that use less memory.

2. You can disable background services if there are any that you don't need.

3. Check the list of startup apps, and if there are any that you don't need you can stop those from automatically loading at startup.

4. I'm not familiar with Minecraft requirements, but maybe it needs more than 8 GB RAM. Check the developer's stated requirements. You might need to add another RAM stick.

5. Unused RAM is wasted RAM. You want the RAM to be used, as that will help your computer's performance. RAM that sits there unused doesn't help anything. Windows will manage when it needs to unload items from RAM to accommodate more urgent processes. So, unless there is some other issue that concerns you, don't worry about it. I don't see a problem (unless you cannot run Minecraft properly, which may require additional RAM).

You'll find lots of advice on-line suggesting ways to constrain or alter how Windows manages RAM. Most do more harm than good. Windows 10 does a good job managing RAM. Assuming that you have enough RAM, Windows will use more when it needs to, and will free up RAM from previous processes as required. I wouldn't worry about it.

I understand that you're having issues with high RAM usage on your laptop. Here are a few things you can try to troubleshoot the issue:

  • Check for background apps: Make sure that there are no unnecessary background apps running that are consuming RAM. You can do this by opening Task Manager and checking the "Background Processes" tab.
  • Update your drivers: Make sure that your drivers are up to date, especially your graphics driver. You can download the latest drivers from the manufacturer's website.
  • Run a virus scan: A virus or malware infection can also cause high RAM usage. Run a virus scan with your antivirus software to see if there are any infections.
  • Disable startup programs: Startup programs are programs that start automatically when your computer boots up. These programs can sometimes consume a lot of RAM. You can disable startup programs by opening Task Manager and clicking on the "Startup" tab.
  • Increase the virtual memory: Virtual memory is a portion of your hard drive that is used as RAM when your computer runs out of physical RAM. You can increase the virtual memory by opening the System Properties window and clicking on the "Advanced" tab.
  • Upgrade your RAM: If all else fails, you may need to upgrade your RAM. This will give your computer more RAM to work with, which can help to reduce high RAM usage.

Here are some additional tips for troubleshooting high RAM usage:

  • Close any unused programs: If you're not using a program, close it. This will free up RAM that the program is using.
  • Use a memory cleaner: A memory cleaner is a program that can help to free up RAM that is being used by unused programs.
  • Manage your startup programs: As mentioned above, startup programs can consume a lot of RAM. You can manage your startup programs by opening Task Manager and clicking on the "Startup" tab.
  • Use a lightweight browser: If you're using a heavy browser like Chrome, you may want to try using a lighter browser like Firefox or Edge.
  • Keep your operating system up to date: Operating system updates often include performance improvements that can help to reduce RAM usage.
