virus made me delete 2 files. Need help in restalling.

Question

the virus w32.welchia.worm messed me up bad.

I cleaned my inspiron 2650 from the virus -doing so deleted two files. C:\windows\system32\wins\dllhost.exe

and system32\wins\svovhost.exe

I know this- the best thing about windows XP was I could fix my screw ups with system restore before the virus, and now system restore is gone. I ran every disk that came with this 13 month old dell and still no system restore is found. Thanks in advance for the reply.

Try this first

1. Click Start->Run->C:\windows\inf

2. Look for SR.INF and RightClick on it

3. LeftClick Install

Follow the prompts, Reboot and System Restore will be ready to use.

If this does not work, please post back and I can give you directions for a Repair Install of Windows XP.

Those are not legitimate windows files.  They need to be deleted.  Follow the instructions here.

Okay.   but they are deleted. I thought i wanted them back. Aparently not. My goal is to make system restore appear again. Computer read 'lost'

I have no SR.INF

So i did SR and followed the instructions. all i got was the same old window that reads

the procedure entry point remote assistance prepare system restore could not be located in dynamic link library.

system restore can be found in c:\windows\system32\restore.. the filename is rstrui.exe

so i swent to file search - a window opens up and there are 4 icons in the window box.

If i check system 32 on the side it reads hidden files.

I think I need a total restore back to origional configuration. Is that the same as a clean restore ?? thanks

To find and show hidden files and folders with search, click on 'more advanced options' and check the first three boxes are ticked. Also, in Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, View tab,  check 'show hidden files and folders', uncheck ' hide protected operating system files', and (to see the file type extension), uncheck 'hide extensions of known file types'. You might also find it easier to use details view, rather than icons view (the views button on the Windows Explorer taskbar. Message Edited by JRosenfeld on 01-02-2004 11:30 PM

I gave up and hired a guy to boot from dos.

It's back to the origional configuration.

I often wonder if this is advanvement. My pro said XP is good. I just know I had to have a pro install it, as with my old Windows 95 , I just put in the start up CD. Thanks to all for thier efforts. Sometimes you just have to pay to play.
