Vista 32-bit to 64-bit upgrade....DSN ID 158098

I just spent the last two hours talking to Dell Customer Service, Dell Sales, Dell Technical Support and even Dell Financial Services.  I have no idea why I was transferred to Dell Financial Services but it appeared like nobody at Dell has the slightest clue what DSN ID 158098 was.  In fact, I was told by the people who tried  to help me that they had no way of looing it up with their system.  Basically, I have better access to their policy than they do themselves lol.

Per my understanding, this policy clearly stipulates that customers can upgrade or downgrade to a similar version of Vista but the people I talk to were pretty convinced that I was trying to write new Dell policy here.  I'm based in the US so I was hoping that I was going to have a little more luck with this but I don't even know where to start looking for help.  I mean, the people I talked to didn't even know where to transfer me to judging by how many different specialists I ended up talking to.   Anyway, I'm keeping hope alive and praying that one of the resident Dell Desktop Liasons takes pity on me and decides to help me.  I haven't yet received my system (it shipped yesterday) so thankfully I still have some time.

I may give Dell another call when I have another hour or two to burn but I'm pretty exhausted right now and I thnk I may need a little more time before I take another crack at it.  If any of you community members have any helpul tips, it would be much appreciated.  Thanks and happy new year.

Well just an update I had no luck with anyone .. trying to get these DVD .. and the tech support online and via the phone they say that the system is not setup for the 64bit... which is odd when you can buy the system from dell online and are able to download the driver from their support site.. someone need to get their story right.

if anyone out there from Dell support can help with this that will be great.

I can send you out the disk provided you are within your warranty period and live in the US. If so, send me Dell-Jesse L a private message here in the forum with your name, address, city, state, zip code, phone number ,email address and the system service tag number.

Hey Jesse or Chris,

Can you help me? I m in the same situation.

My laptop M1530 came with 32 bit ultimate, 4 gb ram. I recently found out that 32 bit can only support 3 gb and Im wasting 1 gb of ram.

So I borrowed a vista 64 bit ultimate dvd from one of my friends and I tried using my 32 bit ultimate dvd key, but it didn't work.

It would be really nice of you can help me.

Thanks a lot.

p.s. I paid $3600 CAD for my M1530.

Hi Jesse, I saw your post and am hoping I can get a copy of Vista Home Premium 64-bit as well.  I tried sending my information to you in an email, but the "send email" function under the "contact" link on this page doesn't seem to be working.  Thanks for your help!  I'm looking forward to the 64-bit version.  I tried the "start a conversation" link as well, and I'm hoping that's what the "PM" function is.  I'm not sure though how to respond to one if I get a message back from you.

Sorry....I'm a Dell forum newbie.

orion5276,

Your computer probably could run 64 bit Vista Windows, but Dell does not provide drivers for your computer.

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=22&l=en&s=dfh&ServiceTag=&SystemID=INS_PNT_PM_1720&os=WLH&osl=en&catid=&impid=

I would wait for Windows 7.

This is a link to your user guide to install memory. http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/my_systems_info/manuals?~ck=ln&c=us&cs=22&l=en&lnki=0&s=dfh

Jesse,  I have three questions. First I need to determine if my computer can run the 64 bit OS.  I have an Inspiron 1720 laptop (about 1 1/2 years old) which has an Intel  T7100 processor. According to their website it is EM64T which I believe would make everything on the computer compatible but wanted to verify it.  The second question is  does it come with 64 bit drivers for the hardware?  The third question is how to get the 64 bit version?   I just bought additional memory from Dell and would like to use it all.

Jesse,

I'm sure you are getting a lot of these requests, and I apologize if this is not the correct way to go, but I too have been trying to get the 64-bit version of Ultimate to complement my 32-bit disc, without luck.

If you can help, that would be great.  If not, any direction you can point me in would be great.  Thanks in advance for anything you can do.  I hope you have a wonderful Easter weekend.

Thank you,
Jeff

Jesse,

I'd like to get this upgrade too if at all possible. I have a dell computer within the warranty period. I currently have Vista 32 Home Premium. I'd like the 64 bit.

Thanks,

-Tony

Update:  I recieved my 64-bit CD today.  I had gone through several different avenues to get it, so I'm not sure if you were the responsible party or not Jesse, but if so, I just wanted to say thanks!

Jeff

Hi Jesse, I've been trying to get the 64 disc as well. I cannot find the way to send you a private mail. Can you post here how to do it? I'm a noob here too. Thanks! Ok I found how to do it, but when I try to send you an e-mail it closes the window, maybe it's bugged. Can you send me an e-mail and maybe I can reply?
