Vista 64bit on a Dimension 5150

Question

I just installed Vista on my 5150 home computer and I thought it would have most of the drivers nedded.I know the sound driver is dell's own. But I need some usb drivers and few more. It was jyst a long day so I did it just to check it out. But I also had problems with finding drivers that it needed. Do the modem drivers come from Intel?I tried to install my D-link DWL-G132 wireless adaptor but it wouldn't "recognise" the driver I had for it from D-Link's own website for Vista!?ANyway do any of ya'll know what drivers are needed? Will the XP drivers for my 5150 work? I know the dell support site doesen't show any other than chipset and video and bios. ANy hints or suggestions?

Vista 64 bit drivers are needed, not from XP. You can go to the modems online web sight to see if they have the 64 bit drivers for it. You will not find any Vista 64 bit drivers from the Dell driver site.

Wish you had not purchased Vista 64 bit for that older system. Many complaints, many more advisories to stay away from Vista until the next system purchase on systems two or more years old. Too many issues and a waste of money for really no noticeable gain unless you like looking at the boring effects.

Well like I said ,It was a long boring day so I used my Gateway Vista on my dell.I was going to reinstall Windows media back on my dell but i thought I'd give vista a shot to see what i would do.And like you said it has 'issues' with my older dell.It was to slow! Or my computer is to old!!But I'm happy with Media Center XP on it. It was just a test to see if it would handle vista someday....It would if I get more memory (only have 512) and maybe a video card.

Not suppose to run a OEM vista from Gateway on a Dell OEM system.  Not only many issues but a no no as well.  Its illegal to change from one system to another Message Edited by SR45 on 02-18-2008 10:15 AM

I wasn't trying to install it FOREVER. Just wanted to see how it would react......to
see if it was worth buying. I already formated the HD and re-installed XP Media back.
I knew that it would have to be activated and all and I didn't intend to lave it.
The device manager had some yellow ? marks i couldn't figure out what they were,
Dell's drivers support site didn't fix them all but it all good cause I like my Media Xp
anyway. Just need to get more memory!
