Vista Ultimate 64 bit edition media

Question

I've just received my new XPS 420 and the Vista Ultimate DVD doesn't seem to have the 64 bit version of Vista on it. Is it possible to get the 64 bit edition of Vista Ultimate from Dell or do I have to purchase a separate license from MS?   Thanks in advance.

dell only supplies 32 bit software. for 64 bit vista you will have to buy a new cd with license and reinstall your system with it.

You might be interested in the responses I received to '32-bit versus 64-bit Vista' below. Based on the responses and discussion with Tech Support, I decided that going to a 64-bit Vista is not adviseable, at this time. However, the discussions with Tech Support seemed to indicate that Dell would supply the 64-bit version, but will not support it, and it violates the warranty. There is also an issue with drivers. I will likely re-evaluate in six months to a year.

My take on 64 bit windows is it will be something common in about 2 - 3 years when the next vesrsion is released.   I really feel you really do not need 64 bit windows until you have 4GB+ memory on your machine.       The drivers are the biggest issue, but not sure there is much benefit until you have 64 bit software.  Only some of the server software is 64 bit, like Exchange and SQL Server.   I would take advantage of the 64 Bit CD if they offer it, just in case.

Hi When you install Vista 64 bit you have to install it by wiping out the 32 bit version and start with a clean hard drive in other words you can not upgrade to 64 bit ! So do not buy the upgrade version thinking it will upgrade the 32 bit version ! It has to be the Retail full 64 bit version or the OEM 64 bit version !! And most of the 32 bit software that works for XP will work for Vista 64 bit as long as it does not have to install a 32 bit driver all drivers have to be 64 bit! With my Inspiron 1501 and Dimension E 521 all of the software that came with  them from Dell works for Vista 64 bit even the Roxio burning software works with one patch ! You do not need 64 bit software to run a 64 bit OS !! All of my computers have Vista 64 bit on them in one form or another , and the only problems that come up is with the 32 bit version as in updates. I have never had any problems with the updates that are for 64 bit ! I started running Vista 64 bit before it was out the public and i will stick with it . All of my older hardware works with Vista 64 bit even my Casio camera works for Vista 64 bit where it does not with XP Pro 64 bit ! Any away good luck of you run 64 bit or not ! See Yea!!

I plan to buy a Dell computer with 4 GB RAM so I spent a lot of time to find a way of getting Vista 64Bit. Dell only delivers 32Bit but there is a way to get a legal copy of Vista 64Bit you can use your license key with you got from Dell: You can order an Anytime-Upgrade DVD from Microsoft. The data on these DVDs is said to be equal to an normal installation DVD of Vista. The normal use is an upgrade to an more expensive version of Vista. So go on this site, select any upgrade an you get asked if you already posses an Anytime-Upgrade-DVD. Say 'no' and you will see that are having the (expensive) upgrade an an Anytime-Upgrade-DVD on your list. No remove the license and keep the DVD. Your order costs now about 4 Euro. Pay attention that you selected 64Bit and the correct language and order. You will get an DVD you can re-install Vista with - I'm talking about the 64Bit version! Are you sure? There were a lot of people in the forum who used their OEM keys for Vista 64Bit (at least they claimed that ;). Did you try or why do you think I am wrong?
