Vista Ultimate-where do I see available wireless networks?

Hi,

I recently bought the Inspiron 530 with the wireless-G card and I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate. I'm having problems using it to connect to my wireless network. On my laptop running Windows XP Pro, I have a Connect To Wireless Network tool where I can see all the available wireless networks and connect to one. I can see a handful in my neighborhood. Where do I see the same thing from Vista Ultimate?

thanks,
David

Hi

View Available Wireless Networks on Windows Vista*

Navigate to the Network and Sharing Center using several different methods:

  1. Start»Control Panel»Network and Internet»Network and Sharing Center»Connect to a network
  2. Start»Network»Network and Sharing Center»Connect to a network
  3. Right-click mouse on System Tray icon (2 computer monitors image at lower right of screen)»Network and Sharing Center»Connect to a network

Hi

don't forget to check the option that says "Start this connection automatically". If you check this option, Windows Vista will connect automatically to the selected network every time you log in.

If no networks are found, you can manually enter all network settings. This is how you do it:

In the “Connect to a network” window, click on “Set up a connection or network”, like shown in the above screenshot. Select “Manually connect to a wireless network” and press the “Next” button.

First, enter the “Network name”. In some cases the network name is identical to the name of the router - for example, my router is a netgear, so the name of the network is netgear.

Choose the security type and the encryption you use on your network. Now type the security key and check the option "Start this connection automatically".

Click the "Next" button, then click "Connect to..." and that should be all. You successfully configured a connection to a wireless network.

I tried that but it didn't work. It doesn't recognize any wireless networks. It's as if there's no wireless-g network card. I can see several wireless networks from my laptop running XP Pro. My new Inspiron 530 running Vista Ultimate doesn't see any.

Hi

When you order the computer wireless network card is a option

You need to buy wireless network card first for the computer and it will see the wireless networks.

Do you see the wireless NIC in the Device manager?

Assuming you have a wireless NIC do you see a WiFi LED indicator on the notebook?

Is it lighted?

If not try pressing the Fn key and F2 key this is usually the key stroke to turn it off or on.

Check the BIOS and see that it is turned on.

Hi everyone,

My problem has been solved thanks to another user. Please see this thread for more info:

It's unacceptable that Dell would ship products that they clearly never tested.
