Vostro 1500: System Restore Doesn't work

I have an 8 month old Vostro 1500 with XP home edition.  However, I have never been able to get System Restore to work.  I checked to see if it's turned on and it is.  When I go to system restore, it tells me to pick a highlighted date and time and click on restore.  However, after the machine restarts, a window pops up saying that the system cannot be restored to this date and time and that the computer will finish booting up.  It does this no matter what date & time I pick for restore.  Any ideas on how to get System Restore to work?  All of the Windows XP books I have read only address how to use system restore and how to turn it on or off.

Never mind.  I found several posts here in the forum that address this issue.  I'll try them first.

Mary G is correct, but to clarify: disabling System Restore removes all restore points, and not just corrupted ones.  To use System Restore after that you would have to create a new restore point, or wait for one to be automatically created (based on your current System Restore settings).

In case you didn't find this fix: Turn off system restore on all drives and reboot the computer. Select System Restore again and set a Restore point you can test. When you have the problem you are having, it normally means your Restore file is corrupt. The only solution is to turn off, which removes all the corrupt restore points and restart it. You will then have new restore points. All your old restore files are gone, but they were unusable.
