will not boot into XP

Please help!

I have a 1 week old dimension 5150.

After working OK for a couple of days, the system will not boot into XP.

I have tried f2, f12, ctrl f11 on Dell start-up, even managed to try (without success) safe mode boot-up, all end at the same point of a blank screen.

After going through the Dell screen, and then the XP splash screen, two dialogue boxes appear.

The first is box headed services.exe - bad image, the narrative is "C:\WINDOWS\System32\UxTheme.dll is not a valid windows image". I click "OK" through that then a second error message begins "lsass.exe - bad image, then same narrative as before. I click "OK" then the machine just gives a blank screen with a mouse pointer and will not respond to anything further.  The people using the PC last had limited user rights so I can't imagine they messed it up.

All I had done was run all of the windows updates, initiate the virus checker, firewall and some non-contentious software. I had just run the Norton Ghost option, but not tested it.

Without a reinstall disc, I have no idea what to do next and the FAQs all seem to assume you can boot successfully.

Please help! Jonathon

It is a week old? Call Dell and demand a NEW replacement. NOW! do not accept a refurbished replacement, only a new one since that is what you purchased.

Mombodog has a point, but irrespective of present problems you should have been supplied with OS reinstall CD & Driver/Utilities CD (as minimum) from Dell.

Looks like drivers you mention are corrupt/missing & need to be reinstated.

Not sure if you have tried typing in the key words in Forum Search This Board box, but there are lots of similar type problem posts with replies from experts like RoHe etc.. For one of many examples see this post.

Must have missed that new Dell savings scheme (a real stingy one)? Have noticed certain moderators suggesting sending private messages for TAG No. info etc. & arranging supply of CDs (presumably free of charge, maybe not?)

Dell does not supply any disc's with new PC sales any more, you have to buy the windows reinstall disc for $10 and request the resource disc as well...

I just do not think anybody should have to work on a PC that is a week old, Let Dell do their job and return it.

Thank you for your advice. Fair play to Dell they replied this morning and will ship the CDs to me tomorrow.

Good to here that news.

I certainly wouldn’t accept new or even refurbished PC without backup CDs. Meanwhile suggest you carefully research subject problems on this Forum whilst waiting on your disks. Best of luck.
