I talked to my client and had him install Windows Live Mail.  It copied all his folders, account and address book from Windows Mail automatically.  He is going to do the Win 7 upgrade tomorrow and from what I can find around the web that should work OK, since it's an in place "upgrade"  Worst case he will have to reinstall Windows Live Mail again and since it's already on the PC hopefully there will be no problems.

With other versions of Windows this wasn't an issue since the OS came with an e-mail program.

Thanks/Jack

fireberd,

Windows 7 doesn't have a native email client, and it won't import the version of Windows Mail from Vista, unfortunately.  However, from what I have found, Windows Live Mail works fine as an email application, and should be able to import settings and email messages from Windows Mail if you upgrade from Vista to 7.

The client's upgrade went without problems.  Installing Windows Live Mail first was apparently the way to go.  Win 7 install accepted the Windows Live Mail as an e-mail program, he didn't have to reinstall it.

will it import his existing Windows Mail address book?

Did you get this figured out?

I just did it, you have to export the address book in Windows Mail to a CSV format, then inport the CSV file in Windows Live Mail.

It is not that bad. Just download and install window live mail. It looks and feels just like windows mail and as fireberd pointed out it will import all your settings from mail.

Mombodog, he did have to export his Windows Mail to a file then import it into Windows Live Mail.  When he first installed Windows Live Mail it automatically copied over everything but he later found out it only copied over about half of his address book.  As I had him export the address book before installing Windows Live Mail he had the address book file to import and that took care of the missing addresses.

I have an Acer laptop with Vista HP 32 bit that I have MS Office 2003 installed and use the Outlook 2003 e-mail program.  I upgraded it yesterday to Win 7 HP 32 bit and there wasn't any issue with Outlook 2003.  Win 7 set that as my "default" e-mail program.  Actually the upgrade was relatively painless.  There were two issues the compatibility scanner found that I had to correct but that was all.  All the hardware and Vista drivers were compatible.  The Acer enet management program was flagged as incompatible and as I have an iPod and iTunes installed I had to deauthorized the iTunes before I could install.  As the Win 7 upgrade runs from Vista, rather than having to boot with the Win 7 disc, I had to fix the two flagged problems, restart the PC and then start the Win 7 upgrade from the beginning - it wouldn't let me fix the problems and continue.  It took me about two hours to upgrade the laptop.
