Win 8 on laptop Inspiron 1721
I have been trying to upgrade to Win 8 but get the message that ATIAHCI compatible RAID controller is not compatible with Win 8. What does this mean and what must I do to make it compatible?

Hi dell625,
Inspiron 1721 is built with an optional second hard drive. Would like to know if you have 2 SATA hard drives in the unit. 'RAID controller' error shows up as RAID may not be configured properly. If your system was shipped with a single 'hard drive', try disabling 'RAID' in system BIOS; else switch the SATA mode from ATI to AHCI. You may find the following steps useful:
- Power off the laptop
- Power it back on and when Dell splash screen appears, repeatedly tap < F2 > (If Windows logo appears please repeat the steps)
- BIOS screen appears (Use the arrow keys to select and expand 'Onboard Devices' and navigate to the option 'RAID operation': Refer to the image below)
- If a single 'hard drive' was shipped with the system, set RAID to 'Off'; else set SATA operation to AHCI mode
- Tap < ESC > to exit BIOS and ensure that you 'Save Settings'
- Restart the laptop and recheck results
You may also face issues with 'Windows 8' upgrade as this system is not tested with 'Windows 8' and compatible device drivers are not available on Dell support website. Hi Saurabh,
How do you set the Raid to "Off"? It only appears to give you the option to change to "Raid Autodetect/ATA". Otherwise, how do you set SATA operation to AHCI mode?

I changed Sata Operation to the "Raid Autodetect/ATA" and then did a clean install of Windows 8 (Google this procedure) from a dvd I created from the downloaded upgrade file (ISO). I had some problems finding the RAID Controller driver to display and delete the old partitions that Vista was saved on, but I eventually found it from browsing the Drivers CD that came with the laptop. Windows 8 then installed 100%, but at the very end of the process it gave me the error message "Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart".
When it restarts, press F12 to Repair and chose the Windows 8 DVD. From this point in I got the getting device ready message and then it installed Windows 8 successfully. Hope this helps!
