See if the information here allows you to correct the problem.

I used REGEDIT.EXE and deleted every reference to KB835732. Then reinstalled the UPDATE (KB835732).
When I rechecked WINDOWS UPDATE it still wanted to install the CRITCICAL UPDATE (KB835732).
Can you offer another suggestion about this particular update.

You might try the "Request technical support" link here.

One other thing you might try is deleting the catroot2 folder and trying the update again. This is a Microsoft suggestion for solving other problems with Windows Update but it might also correct your issue. (If it does, please post that fact.)

I've contributed to another thread on this topic as I'm also afflicted & haven't yet found a solution. Deleting the catroot2 folder didn't help, I'm afraid.

I've uninstalled then reinstalled, downloaded the hotfix to a file then installed it from there, renamed catroot2, tried the VB patches, installed sp1a (from sp1), ran Net Meeting.  It keeps coming back. In PCWorld I read an article about this reoccurring Hotfix.  It can cripple Windows 2000.  Check the Microsoft Forum, there are hundreds of people with this same problem.  I turned off the Automatic Update.  MS probably won't fix this until SP2

Question is this. Is Security Update for Windows XP (KB835732) actually INSTALLED and not recognized by MS WIN UPDATE? Or is Security Update for Windows XP (KB835732) NOT INSTALLED.
My understanding is that this update is suppossed to prevent the Sasser worm that is in all the press as huge problem.

To protect agains sasser update virus definitions, Symantec (Norton) have it as of May 1. I expect McAfee also. Currently, it is worth updating virus definitions daily, at least Norton AV live updates has a new update pretty well every day instead of the usual weekly.

Just downloaded 3 May update, that includes sasser.D, previous ones had earlier sasser mutations.

I stupidly tried to install SP1 on Monday - last year I was offline for 4 days as a result of a bad download.

Since Monday this week I have spent HOURS on the phone listening to recordings that 'due to the virus we are  very busy'....

Finally connected to Joel  Enns at Microsoft last night and he spent about three hours walking me thro a fix and got back online this morning - stupidly tried to install SP1 again and got a blank screen again.

Luckily (?) I got back to Microsoft and had great help from Redell - the SP1 had corrupted my N Videa function.

I paid £29-00 Sterling to Dell helpline  - was advised  'The only solution is to reformat' - they agreed today to credit this charge.

I paid £53-00 Sterling to Microsoft suppport and the support was exceptionally good - but - as the problem last year and this week was caused by SP1 - where can I send my invoice?

As a PS to my post above,

 

MS have e'mailed and credited me with the cost of repair, and I have stopped swearing at Dell and Microsoft.

Denny, one question?

I did a defrag today after the weeks' problems - I am down in free space from 83% to 81% on a Dell 40GB 8200 XP Home Edition - should I be concerned? Can I safely clean anything to recover capacity?
