Win XP Pro 64-bits on Inspiron 1525?
Hello all,
I have ordered a Inspiron 1525, with a Core 2 Duo processor with 2.0 GHz (T7250) and 4 gb of ram. It comes with Ubuntu 7.1 as Operating System.
I plan to keep Ubuntu (or switch to other distro), but I also have the possibility to install Windows XP x64 Professional, with 64-bits, that would take full benefit from my System.
But I don't see people talking about this Operating System, then I wonder if there are drivers for all the hardware parts of the Inspiron 1525 available for XP 64-bits.
Have anyone used it (or tried to)??
Also, I would like an opinion if it is worth to eventually get the Vista 64-bit ("Extreme Ed."). At first I thought that it would be a waste of system resources, but since this configuration is quite high, it could have good performance. I do not have much experience with Vista, just know that it is very slow on older computers, but maybe it has something optimized for such newer systems. How do you think it will be the (performance) difference on my system if using XP or Vista 64-bits?
(I guess that there are all the drivers for Vista 64-bits, since it is available to have when you order the laptop)

I cannot understand why Dell doesn't support Vista Ultimate 64-bits...
but even so, aren't there drivers for the hardware parts, from the manufacturer sites?
Anyone tried?

Ok, that is fine. But they could sell 64-bits OS since the hardware supports it. But they don't, and what I said on previous post is more like a comment, not a question.
Is like Ford selling cars without airbags (or something else that is not entirely necessary for driving but would improve the car) and the car has the spaces for the airbags but they are empty.
The question is if anyone tried to install the airbag, I mean, an Operating System that will take full benefit of the hardware. I am not asking if Dell would support it. I believe that the manufacturers of each part released drivers for 64-bits systems, but since I don't have the laptop yet, I don't know every driver specification and can't look for its 64-bit version.
Dell has already postponed my delivery 2 times. I will not have the time to play around with Operating Systems (as I wold have for the last weeks, I am quite late with studies right now and I don't have other computer). So, I am trying here to get some answer to this before trying out myself... I believe that someone already tried it...
If I don't get any answer here, I shall try it on the future (maybe on August, when I return to my home university). Then I can post here the results...

I know this is kind of an old post but I'm wondering the same thing... the proc is x64 compatible but there has to be sufficient BIOS support for it... With the lack of x64 XP drivers I'm doubting they support it at all. I was about to attempt to install Windows 7 x64 and realized I should ship my machine in to repair the irratic touchpad before I loaded an unsupported OS on it. When I get it back in a week I'll be dropping Windows 7 on there x64 or 32 if necessary.
If I remember I'll post back!
And yeah, that Ford selling GM cars is a bad analogy :)

I am not very techinical and this may not apply to your problem. Just a general comment. I purchased an XPS M1530 with a 64 bit Vista OS. I was told by the sales associate that eventually everything was going in that direction and I would enjoy enhanced performance. He indicated I should not have problems with it. What I found was that the programs I owned (photoshop, Cannon Printer Software etc. etc.) would not load onto the machine. Epson has not been able to respond with a patch so I have no printer. Be prepared to buy new software. A machine that should be very fast and productive has been anything but.
