Win10 upgrade / Dell OEM license valid ?
Using the Media Creation Tool to try to install from USB, every time I get to the 'please enter your product key' bit I get an error message saying "This product key didn't work. Please check it and try again or try a different key".
System specs : M17xR4, Win8 came pre-installed from Dell and was upgraded to Win8.1. Existing windows license key read from registry, and win8.1 currently activated.
So.... do I need to wait until Dell produce a "Windows 10 Recovery media disk", or am I missing a step somewhere to convert a Win8 product key into a different Win10 product key ?

Thanks for the reply. A little confused because I *thought* I was trying to do an in-place upgrade with the Media Creation Tool, not a clean install. Oh well, guess I'll have to wait few days/weeks/months until the 'upgrade to win10' icon gets round to notifying me... :(

Check out this thread on clean install of Windows 10.
Long story short, you need to do the Windows 10 upgrade PRIOR to doing the clean install, so that Windows can insert the correct product key into the system for the Media Creation Tool to read.

You can do an update using that tool, but from what I understand you don't input a product keycode.
NOTE: I haven't tried that tool myself so I'm just going off what I've read on these forums and others, so it's all 2nd hand.

15 hours later.... the upgrade is complete.
As Todd correctly surmised, the issue is that if you use the MCT to download to a USB stick, it will treat any use of that download as a fresh install. When you go to the Microsoft download page, instead of choosing the 'download to USB' option you must choose 'Upgrade' instead. And wait.... and wait.....
Issue solved, many thanks Todd for pointing me in the right direction.
