OEM CDs for operating systems which were originally installed on another system cannot legally be used on any other system.  The legalities of such things aside, an OEM Windows ME CD for a Dell system (for example) will not allow installation on a non-Dell system, such as a Compaq.

You can purchase a new (unused) OEM version of an operating system (Win98SE included) and install it on any system, but you are limited to installing it on one system.

thanks for the info. got me a copy of wind 98se that i want to install on a computer, was thinking i could get a t-series cheap-. the old 440bx systemboards are great for installing linux systems on. i know the newer dells have operating disks for dells only, but when i sell a computer, i always sell the operating disk with the computer.

another question-if one bought like a dimension 8300 without the operating system disk- could one use window xp oem version on it, or must it be a operating system disk for dells?

My XPS T came with a Microsoft Win 98SE CD.  There is no mention of Dell on the label.

It will work fine with any operating system CD.  The only real difference between the operating system CD Dell supplies versus Microsoft's is that the Dell CD will check the BIOS to make sure it is being installed on a Dell system.  This eliminates the possibility of the CD being passed around to friends and relatives.  If your using a Microsoft supplied CD then there is no problem.

You could always view the CD with a Windows Explorer to see how it is set up and what file is verifying the Compaq equipment.  Sometimes you can luck out and the actual program install will be in a sub directory with it's own setup.exe program.  Just run the setup from the sub directory instead and it will by pass the system verification found in the top directory.
