Windows 2000 upgrade

Question

I have loaded the latest bios (A14) and loaded W2K on my inspiron 3500. I have loaded W2K on countless other computers, but this 3500 has me stumped. I can't get the touchpad, or even a mouse, to work. I can't get the display right, can't even see the option for anything like 1024 x 768 or above, can't get some other devices to work, etc. I have re-loaded this with 98 a number of times without problems, and once before had W2K loaded but had some problems so I went back to 98. I have searched Dell for downloads and don't find anything. I began to think I may not be able to run W2K on this box, but then I saw messages on the boards from a number of people who seem to have everyting working. What do I need, and where do I get it?

Search for NT drivers for the 3500 they might also work on your 3500. If not try a fresh install of Win2000.

The most interesting issue upgrading from 98 or ME to the newer operating systems, is you need to get your Drivers for Windows 2000 or XP (which ever system you are attempting to load). Windows 2000 and XP do have a great desl of driver support, not not for everything. It is a very good idea to get your drivers ( BEFORE YOU UPGRADE) as you may NEED THEM!!! In your present system, look in your device manager to view the type of devices you have, then go to the driver site, and see if there is a 2000 driver for it available. Download and save it to other media, which will save you a lot of time and grief.   Also your devices will also show the manufacturor for that device. You can also check their site to see their driver downloads. You may also find the drivers you need there. Message Edited by JD Scot on 10-22-2004 07:12 AM

I had this kind of problem with Inspiron 7000 and my recollection is that everything worked fine once I downloaded and installed the Windows 2000 'chipSet driver' for it and re-booted.
