Check the Drivers & Downloads section of the Dell Support site for that. You might have to look at drivers for the model of system it shipped with in order to find it. If you have trouble post back here and I'll have a look.
For the Dim8100, the drivers for Win2K are:
Intel INF Chipset Update (850 Driver)
Intel Ultra ATA Controller Driver
3Com 3C905c Drivers
and an optional 3Com Customer Diagnostics App for Windows 2000
All of these can be downloaded here on the Dell Support site. There are some other downloads available, but whether you need them will depend on the hardware installed in your system and the applications you are using.
The 3Com diagnostic app is for helping you troubleshoot the netwrok card or network problems (which is why its optional).
I recommend getting the drivers installed, making sure the system is working properly and then start the Windows Update process. As you go through them, make sure its not breaking Windows before installing the next batch as having to uninstall one set of updates to fix another is royal pain.
If you really want to make sure the drivers are good after completing all the Windows Updates, you could reinstall them, but it should not be required.
there is 128 Mb ram in it, windows 2000 requires 64MB ram.
i know its not much, but after a clean install , no futher other programs are installed(only virusscanner(avg) and a spywarescanner(lavasoft)), it has to act normally.even XP can perform 128Mb ram
I saw firmware updates of the harddisk, can that make a differance, could try ofcourse
But now, i think, i do the format again, try again, maybe something went wrong in the first install
by the way, that firewirecard, i mentioned earlyer, are there drivers for??
How much physical memory (RAM) is installed in the computer? It is possible that the system is running slow because it does not have enough memory to run things at a reasonable speed.
I would expect drivers for the Firewire card to be in Windows. If they are not, they should be on the Dell support site.
128Mb of memory should work on for Win2k, but personally I'd recommend at least 256Mb or more based on personal experience. While WinXP can operate on 128Mb of memory, it has a lot of problems unless you upgrade to at least 256Mb.
If you are going to reinstall, try running the system off the network with just the drivers installed (no anti-malware software installed) and see if it runs ok that way. Since you have 128Mb of memory, it is possible that AVG and SpyBot are using up the majority of your system resources, which would effect response times.
i have done now a clean install, and then it works fast, but when i start adding drivers, it,s getting slower and slower, so what i,ve done now is.
I have only installed , the chipdriver and the audio and video driver, and installed 2000 service pack up to 4.
and a spyware and virusscanner.
Its working now with a reasonable speed.
that firewiredriver i can,t find it, thats why i am asking
Further, we have decide to upgrade the memory till 512MB, so here comes then the next question:
it,s an old machine (2001), wich sort of memory, can i use for this motherboard??(Dimension 8100 MT1.4GHz/256K Incl Netwo)
and this (128 MB NON-ECC RDRAM (2X64) 400MHz) is the memory what is now in the machine
another question is , if the machine has 512 Mb of memory in it, we could use windows xp, but are there drivers for this machine for xp??(video and audiocart , i can find these, but what about the chipset, and the atacontrollers0??
Checking the specifications of the Dim 8100, it uses RDRAM (Rambus) memory. The system can have between 128Mb and 2Gb of memory (paired sticks of 64Mb - 512Mb RDRAM). If you are going to get additional memory I recommend getting 400MHz (PC800) RDRAM so it matches what is already installed on your system.
RDRAM must be in matched pairs of memory, and if you only have two peices of memory in the computer than you will most likely have a pair of "dummy" memory cards in place (to complete the circuit) that will need to be removed in order to add additional memory.
If you install Windows XP on the 8100 then at least some of the drivers will most likely be native to Windows. Others you would have to download and install. Unfortunately, I am not sure which would be included in XP.

I hope you can see that, thats the system configuration, Me is changed to windows 2000
there is 128MB Ram in it, windows 2000 requires 64 MB, so that can,t be the problem
certanly now, because there is further nothing installed on it
