Windows 7 x64 locks during video playback on E6400

Hello,

My problem is that Windows 7 x64, installed on my E6400, locks / becomes quite iresponsive after a few minutes/hours/or even instantly if:
 - i am connected to the internet using Dell Wireless Manager
 - Windows Media Player is playing a video or a DVD movie

I also tried, to watch some movies (for some time), then connect to the internet. The same happends, instantly.

In the Resource Monitor, 100% of the CPU time is taken by the System (PID 4)/Windows kernel.
I'm sorry that i do not have a specific error, or something like it. Only Microsoft might have reports from WER, but related to "Windows was not shutdown", and not about the kernel component that failed.

If this happends, and i shut down (hw) my computer, the next restart, even it's minutes or hours later, will take at least 6 minutes. 5 minutes of this time, the system is stuck at the boot screen (DELL E6400) and the progress bar grows like it's a turtle.

Also,  i did not have this problem on Windows 7 x64 RC.

Windows is up-to-date (from WUS).
From Dell Support, the only update that i remember not doing is the BIOS update (currently A17).
The Dell Security Manager, and fingerprint reader software are not installed.

Any ideas, anyone ?

Thank you.

Welcome to the forums :emotion-21:

I'd never heard of the Dell Wireless Manager until now, but I don't see why you'd need to use it to connect to the internet?

I assume you have a broadband connection, and use a wireless router?

Once you have the network/wireless card drivers installed on your system, you just need to search for available wireless networks.

It should find your router, which you'll be able to connect to/through after inputting the security code.

Thereafter, you don't need to use any third-party software to connect to the internet, because a broadband connection is 'always on'.

Is it a retail version of Windows 7 Ultimate you're using?

Did you reformat the hard drive, and perform a 'clean' install, or did you use it to 'upgrade' from Vista (i.e. with Vista still installed)?

Did you reinstall/update drivers after the OS installation was complete?  From what you've said below, I suspect not?

The Dell Security Manager, and fingerprint reader software are not installed.

You need to install those (and any other missing drivers/software) yourself - from your ''Drivers & Downloads' page :emotion-5:
