Windows 7

I bought my Potiflex 380 descktop that came with Windows 7, but I had it rolled back to XP. I now want to upgrade to 7. Do I use the reinstallation DVD for this or do I do something different--I looked and can't tell if Windows 7 is installed.

You should have a Windows 7 disc. Insert it into the computer, power down and hold F12 while booting up, select boot from CD/DVD, follow the onscreen instructions until you have installed Windows 7.

You will need to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (best to use the standalone version) and then install the Windows 7 drivers (I guess you meant Optiplex 380). The Dell Drivers are available here and the standalone service pack is here. You will need to check if you are installing 32 (x86) or 64 (x64) bit windows.

If F12 (not CTRL-12) doesn't work, you need to change your BIOS boot order to put the DVD drive first and boot to the DVD.  You cannot upgrade to 7 from XP.

bacillus, what is a clean install? do I need to delete XP and then use the 7 reinstallation DVD? Will this screw up anything? Thanks!

With a clean install you have to boot from the win 7 dvd and during setup you will have to delete you old partition(s) then re-partition the drive, format and install win 7.

NB you will lose all your personal data and installed programs with a clean install so back up any important stuff. Additionally you will need to download and save all the needed third party drivers from the dell site to install in win 7.

You can't go from xp to win 7 without doing a clean install with the win 7 dvd.

Ctrl 12 didn't work.

Still trying to find out how up move from XP to Windows 7. I purchased my Dell in the middle of a big project and didn't want to deal with figuring out a new interface, thinking it would be simple to upgrade to 7 at a later date.

The sales guy said that Dells come with 7, but they could roll back to XP. With the PC, I got a bunch of discs, including one labeled, "Reinstallation DVD Windows 7". It says that the software is already installed and to only use the disc to reinstall the OS. Any way, my PC doesn't seem to recognize it.

So, how the heck do I upgrade to 7????

Correct I meant f12. I don't know what you mean by changing the BIOS boot

In the BIOS Setup (F2), find the boot order option and set your CD/DVD drive ahead of your hard disk.
