Windows 8 - BIOS update for older computers?
I'm using a Dell Dimension 4600 to test the Consumer Preview of Windows 8 (Yes, I know it's a dinosaur). The Consumer Preview is working fine. However, the Release Preview will not install. I suspect it is because the BIOS is too old. (The version that is currently installed is S12.) Are there any moves afoot to upgrade the BIOS and expose the NX / XD bit in the BIOS security settings?
Or, is there a work around to enable installation of Windows 8 Release Preview on this level of machine?

FYI: Like I mentions before, mY Dell Dimension 4600 is a machine I don't really care if I brick it...that why I forces the BIOS. I will use another BIOS if I knew it would enable NX.

I doubt it. I have used almost every BIOS tool out there to hack it...no go.

I think my kids would kill me if I mess up their gaming machine, so I think I must restrain from such risky experiments. I recently trashed the firmware on a hard drive case and was lucky to get it back, so my days of risk are over for now.

I looked at my MB and it is an Dell E210882 Rev.A01, and if memory serves me, that means it was made by Intel. It is NOT a 4600 MB that was updated to 4700 MB. It was a 4600 MB that said it was a 4600 MB and after flashing, it says it is a 4700 with the execute bit setting available in the BIOS. When I boot my Windows 8 64bit OS on it, it says Dell 4700. I cannot believe my flash experiment set off this much interest on a MB that is sooooooooooooooooooooo old. I am happily running W8, 64bit and 32 bit on this computer. I did not do any of the things about buying Bios Agents, forcing flashing, etc. I did what my first post said, and to my amazement, it did not brick. I can attach photos soon.....

E210882 is a UL listing not a motherboard part number. INTEL numbers start with AA

My motherboard is a Rev01 (Intel AA-c23142-304); and there nothing to be found for firmware updates or hacks for it. Like I mentioned before I have tried EVERYTHING to flash this thing with 4700/4700C Firmware...got Hyper-threading option now but I think that's the CPU in it, but no No-Execution Bit option. I gave up and loaded Windows 7 64-Bit for my kids, although I would love Windows 8 on it for all the Apps.
One question to ask is what is Captains77450 exact CPU model number (I'm running a SL7PP)? I have bought many different Socket 478 CPU's with research stating it has the NX/XD option, but yet read that the years those CPU's were developed, never had that option (which first came out for the LGA 775 Socket)

I still can't understand how captain77450 did it. I'm sure EVERYONE in this forum would LOVE to see a post of how he did it using a 4700C BIOS update. Did you do it in DOS or Windows? Special bios tools? Maybe it was a glitch on his system that just took it....

I did not realize one could run Windows 7 64 bit on the original BIOS, so I stuck with 32 bit

CPUZ reports My processor ( in my hacked Dell 4600 turned 4700) is Intel P4 630 Socket 775 LGA, 3.0 Ghz, with main board Dell Model OM3918, BIOS Version A10 dated 01/04/2006, chipset i915P/i915G with south bridge 82801FB. I do not want to remove the heatsink to learn the Intel model number.
Last month I got another Dell 4600, out of the trash, with the same MB markings of E210882, but that board was a socket 478. So, you have to have BOTH a compatible BIOS and a Compatible CPU........if your socket does not support ANY CPU that supports the EXECUTE bit, then you are out of luck......
I did the flashing in Windows, with the Dell 4700 program.
Do ur research, but conflicts are everywhere. This says 478 cpus do not support NX bit:
