Windows 8 gestures on XPS M1530 touchpad?

Question

I have installed Windows 8 on my XPS M1530. All good, but the Windows 8 swipe gestures do not work on the touchpad. I installed the Alps touchpad driver that was working on windows 7, but the special windows 8 gestures still don't work. Has anyone managed to get these working or have any ideas what I could try? OK, here we go:

1. Download the drivers from the link and unzip them somewhere.

2. Run the DPInst.exe or right click on the Apfiltr.inf and select Install.

3. Reboot

4. Log back on, hit Win+X and select Device Manager.

5. Under Mouse and Pointing Devices you should see the Alps Pointing device.

6. Hit Win+X and select Control Panel then select Mouse.

7. You should see the standard Mouse Pointer options plus the additional Alps ones such as Edge Action etc.

8. If you do, configure the mouse from there and test the gestures.

9. If like me you don't have these additional tabs on the Mouse Properties page then you need to use an additional control panel such as the DellTouchpad.exe from the official Dell Windows 8 Touchpad package or from another Alps package.

Try steps 1 through 8 first and see if the options are there under the normal Mouse Properties.

The DellTouchpad.exe can be found in the driver package http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriverDetails/Product/vostro-3360?driverId=1JW07&fileId=3080251554

Use the 32bit or 64bit one as appropriate.

Hi robinsonpr,

Dell XPS M1530 has not been tested on Windows 8 environment, however since you have already installed Windows 8 Operating system please do a Windows update and check if the new drivers get installed, then check if the gesture issues are fixed.

If this doesn’t work, I request you to go to the Alps site, install latest driver and see if the issue gets fixed.

If none of these works, then I request you to wait until a compatible driver is launched.

Windows Update didn't pick up any new drivers.

The driver I have installed is the only one I could find on the Dell site which is actually listed as for Vista 64bit. Version is Alps Touchpad 7.1107.115.102 dated 02/05/2010. The Dell product number is R286709.

I found the Alps site at www.alps.com but it doesn't have a "drivers" or "support" page, so I couldn't find any later driver.

Can you advise on where I may be able to find a recent driver?

Hi robinsonpr, We have tried everything but nothing worked, so I am afraid the swipe gesture will not be available for this model with Windows 8 on it.

That's a shame.  Is it possible to swap out the touchpad itself for one which will support Windows 8 side gestures?

It gave me the option for the EdgeAction and a later driver but I still couldn't quite use them.

Thanks Philip. I had high hopes...the driver installed ok and in the UI for the Touchpad settings it even had the page to enable or disable the edge actions.

But as you said, they still don't work :-(

Maybe the Touchpad hardware itself doesn't support those actions.

What is odd is that the little touchpad tray icon DOES show the edge action in blue when you swipe from the side, so it does look like the Touchpad is picking up that action. But it just doesn't do it's stuff in Windows 8.......

So just to double check.... Is your touchpad an ALPS device not a synaptics? The link is for a synaptics driver. Does that work with the ALPS touchpad?

So here's something that worked for my dell xps studio 1645 and I assume it should work for anyone else. Go here.

Click on the only one that says Windows 8 at the top, download and install and it should give you a chance to customize after the installation, but the gestures and swipe should work automatically and it will replace your existing driver. I hope this works for you.

Ah, it's a synaptics device. I apologize, I somehow missed that. It most likely wouldn't work then.

For people struggling with gestures on their ALPS touchpads, I'd recommend these drivers from Fujitsu.

I had to add a control panel from another driver package to be able to setup the gestures but they did work once I did this.

Am struggling to follow exactly what you did though, particularly the bit about installing a different control panel to get access to the settings.

Any chance if listing the steps you did in a complete list here?

Worked for me - without the extra Dell steps. Not got the left and top swipes working, but the right one does. Good work!

You legend! DaddyGeek! All working! I had to go the whole hog on your steps and use the control panel from the other package (step 9) but that worked for me!

So I now have all 3 swipes working. The top one seems to be really sensitive, I keep triggering it unintentionally all the time, but after over 2 weeks of looking for working drivers I'm going to try and stick with it and hopefully get used to it!!

Glad I've been able to help a few people experience the joys of using Windows 8.

For those who would like full control over the gestures, I've uploaded the AlpCP.exe I am using to enable all the Windows 8 gestures, circle scrolling, zoom etc to the link below.

Copy it to the same directory as the installed files (C:\Program Files\Apoint2K) and then run it and you should have a few more options available.
