Windows 8.1 Pro Update Causing "SecureBoot isn't configured correctly" Watermark

Guys, how do I legitimately stop this watermark from showing up? I am booting with UEFI right now but Secure Boot is disabled (gray'd out so I can't even modify this option). I tried doing a Legacy boot, but this doesn't work...this just gives me an error about rebooting and selecting a proper boot device (I'm not sure why this doesn't work either, because I'm selecting it to boot from my hard drive in legacy boot mode). Also, since I just updated to Windows 8.1 Pro from Windows 8 Pro, I'm not sure why I started seeing this watermark, because it was not there before. Anyone have any ideas what's causing this and how to get around it?

If I were to take an educated guess, it could be sometime before we see a fix. Really if what it comes down to is that this is probably not the only issue that stems from upgrading to 8.1. There are probably all sort of bugs/issues crawling out of the wood work for all sorts of different configurations, and if you're the Dell's and Microsoft's of the world, you're probably triaging the issues the best you can, collecting as many as you can find, and probably prioritizing them. The issues with the worst impact get top priority, and the items that are more 'annoying' but still give you full functionality are probably at the end of the list. Chances are they are working the more critical issues (like systems not working at all after the upgrade), and deprioritizing issues like this (I got a watermark, but system is still fully functional).

Sure it's not the answer people want to hear, but sometimes it's nice to have a little color a situation that seems black and white.

until Dell not release an update of bios\firmware for all people who can not bear the watermark can uninstall it with one of two ways..

In trying to start secure boot the BIOS says you must be in user mode and that tells me the NVIDA 555 does not support this so unless NVIDA can fix this with a driver that is it.

I have a newly purchased XPS 8700. I swapped the video card out for a EVGA 660 SC 2GB.

As with everyone here, i have the "Secure boot watermark".

I have written to EVGA and asked for a GOP compatible bios for the card.  They have replied that they can supply a BIOS for the video card, but the BIOS on the motherboard might be a problem.

Microsuck should just put out an update to hide the water mark. I heard there is something in the works now. However, IMHO, if we were to point the finger at anyone, it should be Microsuck themselves. Why? Well, since video card companies are now using UEFI, they still have LOTS of people with older video cards. Microsuck should have known this and held off on the UEFI implementation in 8.1 till the legacy video cards out there are replaced. Meaning, they should have waited till the video card companies had a chance to make sure that they are up to date with their bios.

It seems to me that Microsuck are forcing this on people when the rest of the hardware companies havent caught up yet. They should have waited.

Take this with a grain of salt. Say whatever you want, im being mean or unreasonable etc etc. I really dont care who is at fault for this, just want it fixed.

Hi All,

Dell has released a new document that goes more in depth with possible solutions including directions for specific Dell models.

For Alienware systems with Haswell processors try the following steps if possible.

  • All New Shipping systems with Haswell Processor and Lynx Point Chipset (Inspiron 7000 series, XPS 8700, XPS 2720, XPS 13 MLK, XPS 13 MLK ULT, XPS 12 DUO ULT, AW new Releases) Steps
  • Inter the BIOS (Press F2 at boot to enter System Setup)
  • Go into the Boot Tab
  • Secure Boot to Enabled
  • Secure Boot Mode to Standard
  • Save Settings and Reboot
  • Once you are on the Windows Tiles, Choose Desktop and check if the Watermark is still visible
  • If not visible, reboot once again for good measure
  • If the Watermark is still visible go to next steps

If Secure Boot is Enabled and the watermark still appears (For all other systems that are Windows 8 Certified) Please ensure Load Legacy option Rom is disabled , If Load Legacy Option Rom is enabled, secure boot disabled will be grayed out.

Please let me know if you continue to have problems.

I have a Alienware X51 and i upgraded from windows 8 pro to windows 8.1 pro and i also have the watermark message displaying the following

Windows 8.1 Pro

Secureboot isn't configured correctly

I have spend days on the phone and hours on-line speaking to alienware support and other forum users and tried everything possible

I have all latest drivers and the latest windows updates installed even tried formatting my machine several times and still have secureboot disabled also cant enable it in bios as its greyed out :(

Alienware/Dell have to release a new version of bios to fix this issue!!!

Thank you for the document and instructions.  Unfortunately, it does not work on my XPS 8500 purchased Dec of 2012.  I have the latest Bios (A11), ALL windows 8.1 Pro and Dell updates installed.  I followed all instructions in the document yet the Load Legacy OPROM is still Enabled and grayed out , as is of course, Secure Boot, which is disabled.  Thus, the watermark is still there.  Next!

In the instructions it says, "For systems where SecureBoot and Load Legacy Option ROM are grayed out, A bios update is required after the update. In this case, go to support.dell.com, and download the latest BIOS update for you Dell model." But I have the latest, A09 BIOS and they are still grayed out. Perhaps the Aurora R4 needs an updated BIOS as well? I'm assuming this might work for other Alienware models. This is also counter-intuitive because it previously states that "XPS 8500 systems will have Secure Boot and Load Legacy option ROM Disabled after the Window 8.1 update – this is due to Windows 7 Certified Video Cards. Window 8 Certified video cards or Unified Memory Architecture (UMA) configurations do not exhibit this problem." - Is this the case for my Aurora R4? Because I have checked at https://sysdev.microsoft.com/en-us/hardware/lpl/, and my two Radeon HD 7950's are Windows 8 certified according to that...but as far as being Windows 8.1 certified, they may not be...is that what's stopping me from enabling secure boot? I did get the card through you guys at Dell so I'm guessing AMD is your partner company. Perhaps you guys could ask them to dish out an updated VBIOS for their cards?
