Windows 8.1 Pro Update Causing "SecureBoot isn't configured correctly" Watermark

Guys, how do I legitimately stop this watermark from showing up? I am booting with UEFI right now but Secure Boot is disabled (gray'd out so I can't even modify this option). I tried doing a Legacy boot, but this doesn't work...this just gives me an error about rebooting and selecting a proper boot device (I'm not sure why this doesn't work either, because I'm selecting it to boot from my hard drive in legacy boot mode). Also, since I just updated to Windows 8.1 Pro from Windows 8 Pro, I'm not sure why I started seeing this watermark, because it was not there before. Anyone have any ideas what's causing this and how to get around it?

It is disabled and I can't change the value. When I press enter on the option it does nothing.

The secure boot is in UEFI or in legacy?

I am sorry to read that you are having this problem.  I have posted on the error here.

  • Swipe the charms bar
  • Touch search
  • Key in gpedit.msc
  • Touch gpedit
  • Then under Computer Configuration
  • Touch Administrative templates
  • Then All settings on the right window pane
  • Then scroll down to use enhanced boot configuration data validation profile
  • Touch enabled option and touch apply option
  • Exit and Restart

Here are instructions for using a keyboard

  • Press (Windows Key + C) to open the charms bar
  • Click in the search box
  • Type in gpedit.msc
  • Click the gpedit tile (this will open the computer management window)
  • Then under Computer Configuration
  • Click Administrative templates
  • Then double-click All settings on the right window pane
  • Then scroll down to use enhanced boot configuration data validation profile
  • Click the enabled option and Click the apply option
  • Exit and Restart

Please let me know if this helps.

Hi

I've just updated to win 8.1 (64bit) on my XPS15 L521X after lots of trouble and several failures due to out of date graphics drivers.

Due to the Intel Rapid Storage Technology incompatibility, I couldn't enable Secure boot when I previously did a clean install of windows 8.

I now do have the message "SecureBoot isn't configured correctly, Build 9600" on my desktop, which did not appear in win 8.

I have followed your instructions to no luck unfortunately. I have enabled and disabled "Use enhanced boot configuration data validation profile" and also the policy "Allow secure boot for integrity validation", but there is no change.

I really appreciate your effort to try and solve this problem, thanks!

PA Bear, see my comments below for the how can you fix it section in the tech net article you posted.

  • Check to see if Secure Boot has been disabled in the BIOS, and if so, re-enable it.
    - CANNOT BE ENABLED FROM THE BIOS BECAUSE ITS GRAY'D OUT.

  • Try resetting the BIOS back to the factory settings.
    - DOES NOT WORK. CHANGES REVERT THEMSELVES. READ THIS THREAD AND SEE WHAT ANOTHER USER SAID ABOUT THIS. PROBLEM IS SOME VGA GOP ISSUE.

  • If you’ve disabled Secure Boot and added your own drivers, you may need to reset your PC back to the factory state before you can re-enable Secure Boot. For more info, see How to restore, refresh, or reset your PC.
    - STILL DOES NOT WORK. ANOTHER USER CONFIRMED THIS IN THIS THREAD. STILL A VGA GOP ISSUE IN UEFI MODE. UEFI BROKEN ON BIOS. THIS WILL ONLY WORK IN LEGACY MODE...BUT FORMATTING MY COMPUTER FOR THIS!? **** THAT.

As much as the current level of arrogance Microsoft is showing to its clients right now makes me sick, this is not a Microsoft/Windows issue.

Any settings you change in the system BIOS is completely separate from Windows itself and will exist even without a hard drive installed in the system.  The fact that changing the BIOS settings to enable Secure Boot requires a reboot at which point they are set back to the grayed out status shows that this is a system BIOS issue which Dell needs to address - not Microsoft (even when channeling 80s-era IBM type thinking).

The XPS 8500 has been poorly supported by Dell since it arrived at my house without a DVD to reinstall Windows 8.  By the way, the craptastic Dell backup/restore utility requires that you match the exact same size hard drive that shipped with the system.  This might be a shock to the higher-ups here but most people who want to replace their system drive with an SSD don't buy 1T SSD drives.

In addition, the ATI video card that is the "upgrade" on the order site has been coded by Dell not to accept the official ATI drivers - only the Dell supplied or Microsoft.  Another fantastic nail in the coffin for Dell service.

Sorry for the rant but this is just one more thing added to the abysmal system support that Dell is now "famous" for.

We need an updated and WORKING BIOS - and we need it NOW.

I agree with C0debreaker. Secure Boot has been around for a long time now with UEFI. The fact that Microsoft just started enforcing it does not change the fact that the BIOS is broken for it. What bothers me the most is that nobody seems to even be acknowledging the problem from Dell or letting us know about this issue having been escalated. I'll tell you what's happening (always happens at companies)...their customer support team is probably Googling the crud out of this issue, trying to find workarounds. Problem is...this is one issue that doesn't have one. If there was a reasonable solution I would have googled it by now. I'm an engineer and I work in the field, and I can Google too. Support is often scared to escalate issues to engineering without diligently trying their hearts out at finding a solution...but, this is one issue, that NEEDS to be escalated because clearly, there is no reasonable solution!

This does not work. SeamusO, we covered this case already. I just tested it again, JUST TO DOUBLE CHECK. No good. What you just did on your ASUS computer boots me into the BIOS on my ALIENWARE computer. I see no change in the BIOS settings because I STILL CANNOT ENABLE SECURE BOOT IN MY BIOS. You have a different BIOS proprietary to ASUS. Mine is proprietary to DELL. Could people please read the forum before posting their propositional workarounds? Please...
