Windows 98 SE "PictureProject does not run on this operating system".
I'm trying to install Nikon PictureProject 1.1 software that came with his new camera on a friend's Dell XPS T500 running Windows 98 SE. According to the instructions, the software runs on 98 SE but, whenever I try to install, I get the message "PictureProject does not run on this operating system" and the installation fails. A quick look around Nikon's support website didn't reveal a known problem. I suspect that the software is checking for the Windows version in config.sys or somewhere (because it won't run on 98 original or earlier) and is not recognising the OS as 98 SE for some reason - i.e., I guess that the problem is not with the software but with the version information that Windows is giving the installation program.
Does anybody have a solution? The PC has plenty of RAM and disk space and all the latest Windows updates. I've tried downloading the program and installing from the hard drive in safe mode but the same error occurs. I've got the drivers loaded OK so the camera can download images to the PC and, if all else fails, I'll install some other image manipulation software but I'd really like to find the answer.congigsys

Thanks for taking the trouble to provide that link but I'd already read those notes and I couldn't find anything in them that helped on this occasion. This link:

highlights a similar problem with another Nikon app and points towards the config.sys file as a possible culprit. I can't get to the problem PC for a few days but when I do I'll see if some changes along those lines make any difference. I'll report back any solutions.
