Windows file missing or corrupt

Help-

I cannot launch windows XP.  i keep getting a message that states "windows could not start up because the following file is missing or corrupt \windows\system32\config\system.  I tried the process outlined at the microsoft site to correct this, however I cannot get past the first step.  I get a message that tells me I cannot copy the file.

Any ideas- if I do have to reinstall XP will I lose all my documents??

Thanks!

Hi Macee,

Microsoft help has proven to be usless for many of us and the only solution i can think of to fix a corrupt registry hive is to hook it up to another computer and use then re-create the hive. 'Nosirrah' on the www.castlecops.com fourms has kindly written a comphrensive guide on how to fix this problem.

Most techies dont know how to do this however if you want to give them these instructions it should be easy enough. You may even want to attempt it yourself. There is an easy solution to all of this and that is to format the computer and start from scratch however that would destroy your documents unless you attach it to another computer and copy them over first.

Good Luck1

XP registry is corrupted. Here's link to Dell's step-by-step to fix it:
http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/kb/en/document?dn=1068335&c=us&l=en&cs=19&s=dhs
(Link isn't working tonight, Sunday, but hopefully will be live by time you try it.)
