Windows Me System Restore and Antivirus software

To avoid the error message "unable to initialize virus scanning engine..." after running System Restore, conventional wisdom says to uninstall the antivirus software and subsequently reinstall it. This advice applies to Norton. Are users of other antivirus software, such as, eTrust EZ Armor required to do the same?

If you restore to a point prior to installation of the A/V, yes, you'll need to reinstall.

Thank you. I take that to mean that the error message will come up no matter what antivirus software is in use. I was hoping it only applied to a "conflict" with Norton.

Looking around, you seem to be right. This specific message is associated with Norton. Were you using Norton before you used EZ Armor?

I still have Norton but am considering EZ Armor when current subscription runs out. Do appreciate your interest in this. Don't have a need for System Restore too often, but having to uninstall Norton beforehand and then reinstalling is a bit of a nuisance. May still go to EZ Armor for trial even if it too is subject to the "error".

Norton is notoriously difficult to uninstall, but if you get that message, you probably have something lurking in the Startup tab of MSCONFIG that can be unchecked to rid yourself of that message.

BTW, I'm using the EZ Armor 1-yr demo (came with the MS Security Update CD). The firewall is basically ZoneAlarm. The A/V is easy to use and configure. I may decide to keep it after the freebie runs out.

Go to the Symantec website, go to Support and search the KB for your NAV version using the term "system restore". There are several articles that deal specifically with this problem. I ran into this one a while back (Winme/NAV 2000) and I remember I was able to get around it without having to reinstall NAV.
Hope this helps.

I had the same install/uninstall problem with Norton.  My solution was to backup data on a disk, reinstall ME software, upgrade windows software, and install the norton antivirus.  Everything works fine now.  Hope this helps!

It's unfortunate that Symantec can't do a better job designing an uninstall program that leaves no trace. Believe me, if I had a choice having my computer "infected" between AOL and Norton (name the program), I'd take AOL any day.

I, too, have had problems with NAV after using System Restore in Windows ME.   Symantec are aware of the problem and have produced a Knowledge Base article (Document ID: 2000090514064406) which can be viewed on the Symantec Knowledge Base website here:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/aab56492973adccd8825694500552355

You need to type in the ID number in the search box., then click on Search.     Beware,  this advice only applies to earlier versions of NAV, the only versions likely to be used with Windows ME unless you have upgraded to NAV 2003 or 2004.

Incidentally, if you wish to install EZ Antivirus from the Microsoft freebie disk, you must uninstall other products first.   I used Registry Mechanic to remove the Symantec entries in the registry. although some of the folders were removed manually, as advised by Symantec.    However, if you wish to revert to your previous antivirus program,  I presume that you will have the Symantec disk or Vbox stored somewhere on your hard disk to enable you to reinstall it.       You will have Vbox if, like me,  you downloaded Norton Internet Security over the internet.       You don't need to remove Vbox in order to install EZ Antivirus.

(I have some problems with EZ but I will start a new thread to discuss them)

Appreciate the reply and info. Am curious to know if, with eTrust EZ Armor, Windows Me System Restore can be run w/o getting the error message that occurs with Norton (if no action is taken with Norton before SR run). I'm hoping that the "interference" between Windows Me SR and Norton is only with the Norton product.

To pursue the question further, type "EZ" (without quotes) in the "Search Forum" box at the top of this page.     You will find that there are a number of relevant contributions in other Dell forums.     You may also be interested to know that on the EZ website there are user forums, also a series of Knowledge Documents can  be found.   Here:

You may find some answers in these documents.
