Windows Media Player 10

Question

When playing a file in mp10 - I get audio but no video - this came installed in my system, but I would like to get mp9, can't download from the site- it tells me I have a newer version installed and won't override it - CAN ANYONE HELP ME! XP home, Service pack 2.

You said WMP10 came with your system I would go to the link below and re-load it. Just for safety sake set a restore point. Also have you checked to see if you can see videos on any of your other media players? I'd also go into Start>Control Panal>Add or Remove Programs>Set program defaults>Custom>Choose a default media player.
(It couldn't hurt.)

I too prefer WMP 9 over 10. Simply un install WMP10 fron Control Panel>Add/Remove programs. Reboot. Download and install WMP 9 from the MS website and you are in business.

I have now reverted back to media player 9 - but I am still not getting any video - can someone please help.  I also have Nero on this system (came installed for my burner I assume) so I don't think I can delete that - can they be conflicting in some way? Thanks

The file you are playing IS a video file, correct? Music files have no video. But WMP should show visualizations.

Also, if you are trying to watch streaming video on a slow internet connection, it doesn't work too well.

Yes it is a media file (email joke actually!) - not sure what Codecs are/do?

If you are trying to play an AVI, and your player won't show the video, that probably means it needs a COder/DECoder to play. Does your visualizations work?

You could try going to (IN WMP) tools--options--performance

Click the "advanced" button.
Uncheck "Use Overlays"

OK.

This worked for me when video files would work for a second, then go black.
