Sput,

Sorry, I can't help with exact information on Windows ME, but what I can provide is a listing of all the fixes and patches that were released for Windows 98.  Possibly the listing with give you a timeline of when similiar Windows ME patches were released if the Q and KB numbers are the same.

If you have Windows 98 SE available you might consider installing that instead.  Win98 still has a loyal following and there is a group which releases unofficial security updates and patches for the OS on a regular basis.  They package the fixes / updates into a autopatcher program which makes updating a snap.

May I ask why you're first trying to install Windows Millenium on a computer? Why not Windows XP? Even though I own a Windows 98 SE computer myself...

while no NEW updates have been released for windows ME, I believe the existing/older updates are still available at the windows update site.

assuming you have anything faster than a dial-up modem, i would go to the windows update site [for ME, i believe it should be v4], and let IT determine and find which updates you need --- it should install them in the proper order --- and you might need to do this several times (with reboots in between) in order to get them "all".

actually, you won't need EVERY update... to cite one category, there should be MANY named "Cumulative update for internet explorer".    by the very nature of cumulative updates, each newer version theoretically includes any relevant information from prior updates.   meaning you should only need ONE of these... the latest one... and none of the earlier ones with the same name.

if you still only have dial-up, i'm not sure what to suggest... other than extreme patience

Thanks Majestic.
The thought is well worth the process and may be the best avenue.
I will do the work and let you know by coming back with a repost or the little green check mark:smileywink:

Majestic, of the files I have I was able to date 60% of them. I will google the rest and see if I can find some idea of the dates. Thanks again!:smileyvery-happy:

Sput,

You're welcome.  Glad to hear the info was some what useful.  I came across another site listing dates for Win98 SE updates that you might find interesting.  Click here for that link.

There is also a gentleman who was working on an "unofficial" service pack for Windows ME.  The SP rolls all the updates and patches into one downloadable package.  Click here for a link although there is no indication that he finished the project.

Is this legal?

Good question.  I know the legal department at Microsoft put a stop to the autopatcher project for WinXP.  At the same time the autopatcher for Win98 continues on to this day with user supplied updates and security fixes.  I have no qualms in using it.  After all it was Microsoft that abandoned the OS.

From what I've read in the post the unofficial Sp is a conglomerate of service patches offered at some point by Microsoft of which I have already have the majority. To me it's no different then a short cut. Are those legal?:smileywink:

I guess the question would be once offered to the public is it "legal" for the public to offer when the supplier no longer does?

Majestic, you are a scholar and a gentleman!!  :smileyvery-happy:

In going to the last page (23) of the Win ME SP "unofficial" there is a link to the download. Most likely will save me a ton of time in the rebuild. You were the first person to help me here when I had ME and it seems you may well be the last.
(I am now a MAC user) and still supporting friends with older versions of windows. Tried to tell this one AOL install would create problems but you know, at times people have to experience to learn. :smileywink:

I move even more slowly with the task of rebuilding this box as it seems a rebuild of an old os is more challenging when trying to cover the "updates angle"  Microsoft has pretty much thrown the baby out with the bath water with ME and it seems like the red head step child.
