Windows Service Pack 2

I have a 600m. Had to replace the hard drive on it a few months back. Windows Automatic Update wants me to install the Windows Serive Pack 2 (I have the Service Pack 1 already installed). So does my PC-Cillion anti-virous software. But everytime I try to allow the Automatic Update to do so the installation process times out 1/3rd of the way into it and it fails. (Tried 3 times) I tried to download the Service Pack myself and then try to intall it, and the same thing happened.

These service packs are huge and they take a long time to open up and install. Perhaps somebody can tell me where I can get a copy of it that will actually successfully open and install or tell me how to get my automatic update version of it to go all the way through.

tesserwithpaul, This is a easy to use auto streamer, http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/System-Tweak/Autostreamer.shtml .you do need to get sp2 on your computer for saftey reasons.If you can you should try to get a Service pack 2 cd from microsoft, or you used to be able to get them free at Circuit city ,best buy,and other computer stores if you have any of these in your location.I think people have better luck with the cd than downloading on slow connections. Also you will need to run update to get the 50-60 additional updates since SP2.

Wow interesting thread! Shooting yourself in the foot sounds less painless. However if the copy of windows that is on your pc is corrupt then a new install may be needed. Dont quote me on this but I have found that like with every other version of winders once a leaky boat always a leaky boat.

Dear HiGhLaNdEr48 and jmwillis,

Thanks Guys. I have managed to make a slipstreamed version of XP Professional + SP2.
That AutoStreamer truly is an amazing little program. Although I appricatied learning what it was going to intall to make a slipstreamed cd myself, I highly recommend recommending that program to future people stuck in my situation.

I had to download Nero in order to have a program that understood what an ISO file was and burn it. (That took a while - but Nero 7 looks like it may be worth the 70 bucks or whatever it is. I don't have any CD-R/RW cd's on me right now, so I will have to burn it sometime tomorrow. But I think the hard part is over.

A precautionary (and hopefully final) question: Will I simiply be able to reload my new cd (once created)and XP will know what to pick up to update itself and rid me of this sp2 issue or will I have to do anything else to get the slipstreamed sp2 on my system?

bummer, that is not the reply i was hoping for. it only took me a few weeks to put everything back together again not 2 months ago. not really wanting to do that again. but if i have to...

i tried to create a nuke boot cd a while back and never managed to do so. how do i wipe the harddrive to start over?
