"Windows Update will recognize PCs with known problematic drivers and postpone downloading Windows Vista SP1 until the PC has updated drivers or other applicable updates"

Uninstall Sigmatel audio driver from the system (device manager). Reboot. Then ensure that Windows update is set to automatic. Click on check for updates. You may not get it to download the first time. Elsewhere on this forum someone mentioned that it took an hour for the SP1 download to show up after removing Sigmatel driver. This may sound stupid but it actually worked for me as well. I waited for roughly an hour and after several clicks on "Check for updates" it finally did it.

Realize that forcing SP1 to show up is not necessarily a good thing.  Any items you disable to force the download could cause problems if you try to use them after the install.  Be cautious.  Look around the forums and the MS website to read the warnings on this.

Hi beversoll,

I guess you have more experience with Vista SP1. Can you elaborate on what could go wrong and how disabling (rather uninstalling) sigmatel can be a problem for the purpose of updating to SP1? I've gone through these forums as well as MS websites but I failed to get any info on the warnings you've mentioned. Would appreciate if you could post a link /links so that we can check it out as well.

I will look for some of the links I read and post them, hopefully later today or tomorrow.  This work around is working for some people, but I am always cautious.  When SP1 came out it did not appear in my updates.  I had four optional updates (drivers) that I did not install.  I installed them, and then sp1 appeared, but my internal hard drives appeared as external.  It took a few tech people from Dell to figure out the problem.  Basically, I installed drivers that were not intended for my system.  This is a little different from the current situation, but my fear would be Windows Update would try to replace the unistalled drivers and provide the incorrect one.  I will include a link to my post regarding the hard drive issue.  I am a newbie at pc's, so I may be wrong about this situation.  I do like Vista, but have had many problems with it.

Here is an extensive forum on this same issue.  When I have more time I will find the other posts as mentioned.

Hi @ all!

Thanks for your answers! Now I could install SP1. I don´t know why but it appears in the update list.
