Windows Update Keeps Failing

Question

Every time I start my computer I see the little yellow shield stating that I have update to be down loaded.  When I put the mouse cursor of the shield I see that its downloading 0%.    When I go to Microsoft.com and do my window updates from there I keep getting a 'updates failed' or 'error'.    I scanned my computer for viruses and anti-spy ware and everything is cool.  So that cannot be the problem.   Is there anyone who can help me solve my problem?     Desperate need, Cktodd

i would look at 'help and support' at the windows updates website.. also, MS offers free support for updates, so you could cantact them for help..    http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

make sure you turn off your firewall before downloading!

Search these forums for this problem. Failed MS updates have been an issue before and someone posted the fix for it. Ron

Calling Mircosoft was the first thing that I did.  After waiting for 30min for someone to tell me that since my register number has 'OEM', original equipment manfacture.  I have to call Dell for that kind of help.

Thats the update that has recently been introduced to check that your copy of XP is legal if it is your OK but I will repeat to obtain windows update downloads I have to switch my Firewall off before downloading.Have you tried that yet?

if you are using a third party firewall, and you are going to try disabling it, i would use the windows firewall instead..   if you are not using the default settings for the internet zone in ie/tools/options/security, you could try either restoring the default settings for the 'internet zone' (in ie/tools/options/security) or adding the windows updates website to 'trusted sites'.. incidentally, if you are not using internet explorer, if you are trying to use something like 'firefox' instead, that might be the problem..    look at 'help and support' at the windows updates website, and you can contact microsoft for help with windows updates..   the first thing MS will tell you is to check your firewall settings.. i had a problem with the updates recently, and it was due to my firewall settings..   something is blocking the windows validation tool from installing..

Yeah I tried calling Microsoft and they didn't even try to help me. The lady said that i need to call Dell for help on this matter. Because my register key has OEM in it, original equipment manfacture.

However I will try to turn off my firewall and see if that will help.
