Question

Whenever I try to update my Windows XP it says it searches to make sure my Windows is authentic. Then it says it can't detect the authenticity, and won't update my computer.

This is the message I'm getting as to why it won't update. I did change from FireFox to Internet Explorer. WgaNotify Setup Error Setup could not verify the integrity of the file Update.inf. Make sure the Crypotgraphic service is running on this computer.

Start>Run> in the run box, type  services.msc>OK Scroll down and click on Cryptographic Services, right-click on it, then on Properties. In the drop-down box, change it to automatic, and OK out. Go to Control Panel/Admin Tools/Services,  look in there to see if Cryptographic services are running.   It should be running and set to Automatic.   If it is stopped, double click it and check the startup type, set to Automatic, hit apply, then hit the start button. Hit OK

Ok, the previous posts have given you part of the solution.   The reason that this is having problems is there is an underlying service called 'Cryptographic Services' that provides... well... encryption and decryption routines for special functions.  Pretty much as the name implies.  As part of Microsoft's ongoing effort to enforce genuine software (putting aside for the moment whether or not you like it or believe thier motives), to download many new updates your computer has to have had the Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) tool run on it which will verify that your computer is, in fact, properly licensed with a valid copy of Windows.   When WGA runs (the WGANotify.exe tool you mentioned) my understanding is it looks for several different things on the OS, some of which are hashed values and concatenated strings with embedded checksums.  Put simply, it looks for certain kinds of information and then needs to encode what IT finds in hopes of verifying that what your windows has stored is correct.  To do these kinds of checks, it needs the functions that tell the computer how to manipulate the data.   Put simply?   No WGA, No update. No Cryptographic Services, No WGA.   There are three things that need to happen here.   1) Enable/Run the cryptographic service.  (Several people have already been kind enough to notate a couple ways to do it.) 2) Run WGA either web-based ActiveX or the .exe file. 3) Re-Run Windows Update
