Windows XP 4/11/06 Security Updates

A Windows update icon (shield) appeared on my computer this morning (4/12/06). When I clicked it, it stated that 6 Critical updates from Microsoft, were available for installation. These updates were:

KB911565 - Security update for Windows Media Player 10 for Windows XP
KB890830 - Windows Media Software Removal Tool
KB911567 - Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express for Windows XP
KB908531 - Security Update for Windows XP
KB912812 - Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP
KB911562 - Security Update for Windows XP

After I updated my computer, I was informed that the updates were installed sucessfully, and that I needed to reboot my computer. Once my computer rebooted, I was unable to connect to the internet with any of the software I normally use (Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, Mozilla Firefox, & Norton antivirus update). I was also unable to reboot my computer. I had to unplug it, reboot it in Safe Mode, and restore my computer to the settings that existed prior to the update. I ended up doing this twice.

Do you have any information why I am having trouble updating my computer?

I am running Windows XP SP2, Home Edition, on a Dell 4550, with Pentium 2.66 processorr.
