Windows XP and setup.msi returned 1612 or 1635 installer error messages.
I have a Dell Dimension 4600, x86 based PC with Windows XP. I have been trying to update several of my programs. One of the programs is Earthlink TotalAccess 2004 and I receive an installer error message stating that setup.msi returned 1612 or 1635. I have tried downloaing this and also now have the cd and still get the same error. When I hit OK it closes the installer and then I am unable to get into my older version of my program. I get a TaskPanel.exe-Entry Point Not found "The procedure entry point ?GetSetupMiscEntry@@YA?AV?$CStringT@DV?$StrTraitMFC@DV?$ChTraitsCRT@D@ATLAAAAAATLAAV12A0Az could not be locate din the dynamic link library E60Cmmon.dll.". I have to do a system reStore to get the program to work again. I have talked to Eathlink and they say it is my system and Dell staff have given me numerous thinks to do and none of them have worked. Has anyone else received this message and if so what did you do to correct it.

Go down to Windows Installer and set it to Automatic. Reboot.
The results are not guaranteed.

I spoke with both Dell and Earthlink today. After much to do and both Dell and Earthlink staing it was each others problem and Dell wanting $245.00 to help me re format my computer even though I have a service contract with until 2007 I got no where. After a formal complaint with both Dell and Earthlink I got a call back and a answer to this msi. issue.
msi means it is a Microsoft installer issue and the have a solution now to fix this error..
Please go to this website and run the Windows Installer Clean up utility

Thanks for posting back. I would like to know who called back and recommended this? If you look at MicroSoft KB295823 the clean-up utility is not supported with Windows Installer 2.0 which you have. I have found both these KB articles while trying to fix an update problem with Office XP. Also, what did you uninstall? I did successfully uninstall office and reinstall to solve my update problem using the msicuu utility.
I have read a couple of posts on other boards stating this may cause a problem with the msiexec.exe file not found. For future reference, running sfc /scannow corrects this. I had no such trouble.

The only program I uninstalled was Earthlink and then I reinstalled it from their new CD.
