Windows XP doesn't recognize flash drive

I am Running a Dell Dimension 8200, with Windows XP Pro. I plugged a Sandisk flash drive into the front usb port and the computer doesn't recognize it. Other computers accept the flash drive just fine. The usb port functions fine with camera cables, scanner cables etc. This is the first time I have tried a flash drive though.

By not recognize it, do you mean XP sees it but does not know what it is, or nothing happens when you plug it in, no balloon pop up?

Be specific please.

It does not show up in the list of drives in windows explorer. I can't copy to it.

Did you check disk management to see if it shows up in there without a driver letter?

No, it doesn't show up in the list at all. When I plug in the flash drive, it briefly flashes red, and then nothing.
