Windows XP Driver for HP PSC 500

It looks like an old problem with many posts, but I never saw a solution identified.

I just got a Latitude D630 as a replacement for a D600.  Both run Windows XP.  The D600 had a DB25 printer port that hooked up to the PSC 500 HP supplied cable.  It worked fine.

The D630 does not.  So I bought a USB to DB25 Parallel adaptor cable from CompUSA.

The computer recognizes the PSC 500 when connected to the USB port but the Hardware Wizard says the hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software.

Thanks.  I tried it and it said that "update does not apply or memories disk was already updated".

There are known issues with the USB to Parallel port adapters.  Many times not all the control signals are carried through (both ways) as you nedd complete bi-directional operation with HP's.  I can't give you a brand that MIGHT work, but all that I've tried did not work with HP's.

On Desktop's a PCI paralell port card will work, but there is no comparable hardware item, that I know of, for laptops.

Ultimately, you are probably looking at replacing the unit with a new model that works with USB.

I agree with fireberd. These usb>parallel adapters are oftentimes not very reliable. If your computer has a PCMCIA slot, you may want to look at something like this, or if it has an Express Card slot - something like this.

Thanks for the suggestions ... the solution was to get a docking station that had the DB25 parallel connection.
