Windows XP on Latitude C640

Question

Hello all,   I recentely bought a Latitude C640 from an auction on eBay. It came with Windows XP Pro pre-installed and also came with a Windows XP Pro w/SP2 cd. I reformatted the hard drive to do a clean install of XP under my name but for the life of me I cannot install WinXP Pro no matter what I do, I even tried installing Win MCE but to no avail. Even the cd that came with it will not install. I have no problems installing Win XP Home Edition or Win2000 Pro but I'd rather work with Win XP Pro. This laptop has a Win 2000 Pro serial sticker on the bottom and a Win XP logo sticker on the palmrest. Also, with Win XP Home Edition after installation I get the error 'stop: 0x0000006f', any clues? Hay Tony,   Are you having problems with Serial Numbers?  I don't think so.  But I had to ask.     I would do some hard ware testing.  Eg.  Memtests and Hard drive tests.     Google Memtest ISO and then download the software and burn the ISO image.  This creates a bootable cd that will test your Memory. Let the memtest softwareware run for at least 1 hour.  512 is a bit low for XP but it should run.    Also Google IBM fitness test ISO.  Download this and burn the ISO image.  This also creates a bootable CD that will test your HD.   Make sure you choose ATA support only and then do the advance test on you HD.  If you get a 0x00 code after the test is done.  All is well.    Good Luck

Hey Voodoo,   thanks for your quick reply. I guess my cd-rom drive was to blame. I just installed a brand new dv-burner and the Win XP Pro cd that came with the laptop installed without any glitches and so far everything's working fine. Once again, thanks.   Tony

I get the Blue Screen of death and I believe the memory chip is to blame this time. Does the memory test give you a result after it's done? Mine's been running for over 2 hours.   Thanks,   Tony

Tony: Your issue could be due to bad RAM or incompatible drivers, hardware, or software then. As for the memory tests, some do and some don't give you results because some will run continuously until you specify that you want it to stop, while others will quit when finished and automatically display results or give you the option to view them.
