I'm a little confused.

1. You should not have to have a OS activation key since that system was pre-activated by Dell.

2. It should also have a Symantec Restore Utility on it as well that will allow you to use to go back to the day the system was shipped.  What do you mean you tried to reinstall windows, what steps did you use to try this  ?

Vista Restore procedures

3. If you did not have a OS CD with you, how did you attempt a reinstall of windows.  Did you try to use someone eles operating system cd  ?

Request for back up CD's for Dell's operating system, and drivers form link

Hi,

Thanks for your reply,

Am sorry for the confussion. I would have missed few more information. Actually i tried for installing Ubuntu Operating system on top of windows xp which gave me all these problems,

I will cripsly tell the things which i did. I was having windows xp and it recovery cd with me, since i moved to other country for some work issue i missed to take my recovery cd with me and now am completely blank.

I got one windows xp cd from my friend and temperorily installed the operating system with his product code. However i want to use my genuine windows operating system.

Please let me know  if you need anymore information.

Thanks in advance, Ganesh Ramakrishnan

If you can borrow a Dell reinstall CD from someone it will install. It must be the same version of
XP as originally installed.

Either you get the OS that you left behind to be mailed to you or get a replacement from this link.  Hope it works for you now that you are in a different country

If you cannot get the OS CD to be mailed to you nor have another Dell system OS CD in your neck of the woods to borrow, than you are probably forced to get a OEM XP cd from a retail or online store.  OEM means Original Equiepement Manufacture and is cheaper than a retail copy of XP but is only good for one system and no tech support.
