Windows XP Service Pack 3 finally available

Pay attention to the info about Internet Explorer v7 (or 8) in the release notes before you install SP3. You might want to uninstall IE7 first, install SP3, and then reinstall IE7.

No problems here either. I've now got the WPA2 support with my wireless card. :smileyhappy:

I'd like to thank all of you for so quickly providing links and helpful tips for getting SP3 installed correctly.  Hopefully this thread will save a lot of people time and headaches. I know its going to help me out at home. :smileyvery-happy: 

I just "rebuilt" an old PC for our daughter's "second PC".  I no sooner got XP Pro (slipstreamed with SP2) installed, today, and in the automatic updates was SP3. 

 

Since I didn't have a chance to upgrade to I.E.7 yet, it was installed after the SP3 install so the problem referenced will not be an issue (it would not have been a problem anyway as my daughter uses I.E.7 on their existing PC).

 

Visually (desktop) there is no difference.

I think it was about 66MB for me.

the 316.4 MB download is listed as the Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers.

 

On a single PC, the download size was significantly less --- if memory serves me, around 69 MB.

Okay, here's another question....

 

I wanted the full download to put on a disk or flash drive and just use on many machines, rather than have each one download what it needs....

 

But, I was just thinking, since SP3 seems to be little new stuff, is it a big download from Windows Updates, which I assume only gives you the pieces you need?

 

So, on an otherwise up to date machine, does Windows Updates give you a 300+ MB download, or is it much smaller?

it was about 66.9 MB for me as well from Windows updates.

How's this for an error message written in Microsoftese when SP3 fails to install:

 

'Service Pack 3 Setup cannot update a checked (debug) system with a free (retail) version of Service Pack 3, or vice versa'.

 

Say what???

 

A solution is here, but I have no clue what is meant by "checked" and "retail" versions.
