Windows XP System File Checker Problems.

I've got a Dimension 4550 that is about 18 months old. I want to run the System File Checker utility (SFC /Scannow) to check for corrupt system files but can't seem to do this. The progran asks me to insert the XP installation CD to copy .dll files to the computer but then refuses to continue, telling me that the CD I inserted is not the same one that XP was installed with. The XP installation is the one that was factory installed by Dell.

Does anyone have any ideas on this?

Dell (and others) usually clone drives with preinstalled “EVERYTHING...
Most likely that’s the reason.
Call them; they should have a fix of some kind:

Good Luck!

I have the same problem and some tol;d me the path for the cd /dvd drive has something to do with it. mine ( sfc ) works , but not without the (upgraded ) windows pro cd in the cd drive. I think this should run on its own. called dell but they were not helpful / knowlegable on this , says it is ok to have to use the cd. I am still researching the problem and am going to follow up to dell.

dugedoodle
dell dim 4600 40 gb 2.6 mhz or thereabout dvd / cd write etc.
