Windows XP update KB958690 installs but freezes computer
My newish desktop Inspiron 530 has successfully installed many Windows updates already in the last 6 weeks but on 11 March the KB958690 update had a problem. It installed without any error message but on restarting the computer it appears to boot up Ok but the eggtimer stays on view for ever and the keyboard and mouse are disabled. The only way to resolve is to crash stop the computer, reboot in safe mode and uninstall KB958690.
How can I be getting a problem with an OS installed by Dell? It's Windows XP Prof Version 2002 with SP3.
I have turned off the Windows KB958690 update to prevent future install attempts until this problem is resolved.
What can I do achieve a successful installation?

I am having the same problem with my 8 week old Optiplex 755 with a ATI radeon HD 2400 XT graphics card. The system is running Windows XP pro with SP3. If I uninstall the video drivers, the problem seems to clear but then returns in a couple of days. There is another person in our office who is running the same machine and has the exact same problem. The machine runs fine in the safe mode but when you install the video drivers, it locks up upon completion of boot.

I have solved the problem by updating the ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO video drivers. See Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device Manager, Display Adaptors, (select device) Properties, Drivers and select update. Allow the wizard to find an update from the internet. On updating drivers, restart computer. My original drivers were dated 27/09/2007. Now they're 03/02/2009.
Then retry installing the KB958690 Windows update. It works!
The video device was confirmed to be the problem when I ran a Dell PC check tool - it displayed the dreaded blue screen with some gibberish that could be deciphered to refer to the file ati3duag.dll.
