WINDOWS XP/GHOST 2003 PROBLEMS

I am using an exteral USB 2.0 harddrive for backups.  My Ghost 2003 is an integral part of Norton Systems Works 2004.  When I first connected the external drive and installed NSW 2004 I remember having a lot of difficulty getting it to work.  However, I did finally get it to work, but I did get it working and did several backups.  Now I cannot get the Ghost to backup or clone.  I receive a message that the operation has failed.  I cannot remember all the hoops and loops which I went through to get it to work before.  I have tried all the Symantec knowledge base documents to no avail.  After all else failed, I uninstalled NWS 2004 and reinstalled it.  Ghost still does not work.  After the reinstall, I have also picked up a new problem.  When restarting the computer I receive the error message "NORTON PROTECTION: ATTENTION, 'access denied, drive C.'"  I have tried all of Symantecs knowledge base document recommendations on this also and they don't fix the problem.  I did go into msconfig service tab and by the process of elimination have found that, if I uncheck the "NORTON UNERASE PROTECTION," it corrects the error message problem.

I know that this is lengthy, but I would appreciate any and all inputs.

There's a simple way to fix this: Upgrade. 2003 is an older version that probably is not compatible with SP2, which broke lots of older utilities.  If it were me, I'd uninstall all of Norton System Works. I think it's outlived its usefulness. I used to swear by Norton Utilities in the early days, but Windows XP really doesn't need them. It causes more problems than it solves.

I use Ghost 2003 with NSW 2004 on XP Pro SP2 just fine. I use it primarily to do TCP/IP Peer-to-Peer copying and have never had a problem with it on SP2.

For NSW 2004, one needs to have Symantec's SP2 patches (for NSW and NU) installed  AND  upgrade LiveUpdate to the current version. At the top of this page are the appropriate links to Symantec for both.

Thanks Mary G. for the response.  I have seriously considered moving away from NSW, but I have had Norton so long and am not sure that I want to depart from it.  What AV do you use?  Also, is the ms backup with windows xp home adequate and user friendly?  I have found that Ghost is very difficult to use and very time consuming because it will not do partial or progressive backups.  Other than this, I am very happy with the NSW Pro 2004.

Your input is appreciated.

Thanks V.  I run LiveUpdate at least once weekly.  Will this take care of what you are talking about?  Do I need to go to Symantec for further updates?

Thank you for the input.

You need to download the LiveUpdate patch for SP2. When you execute the patch, it will uninstall your old version and install the new version in its place. Running LiveUpdate does not do this.

Will it take care of your error messages? I'm not sure. I was merely responding to Mary G's assertation the NSW 2004 doesn't work with SP2.

If you don't find an answer over at Symantec's support pages, I would recommend:

1) going to the Symantec pages in the link I provided - download the NSW 2004 SP2 patch, (If you use the Norton Utility module then also download the NU SP2 patch - download it and save it anyway, just in case Symantec deletes it), and download the LiveUpdate new version patch for SP2.
2) If you have Norton Personal Firewall then uninstall it (NPF and NSW share several files/dlls together)
3) uninstall NSW2004 and all its components
4) delete folders left behind by Symantec - search Program Files and in Documents and Settings
5) If you are comfortable with REGEDIT, delete sofware entries left behind by Symantec

6) Install NSW 2004 - read the part in my link about disabling LiveUpdate in the Options. You don't want it to automatically run - at least yet.
7) Install the NSW 2004 SP2 patch
8) IF Norton Utilities is installed (I do not have it installed) then install the NU SP2 patch
9) install the LiveUpdate patch

10) launch NSW 2004 and manually run LiveUpdate - as described in my link.

You want any common files that are shared by NSW and NPF to be patched and updated first - before installing NPF.

11) If you have Norton Personal Firewall - leave LiveUpdate disabled in the Options - then install Norton Personal Firewall.

12) launch NSW 2004 and manually run LiveUpdate - as described in my link. This will update NPF.

13) If you prefer - you can turn on automatic LiveUpdate

One of things best things about the older versions of Ghost was that you can run the application from a floppy disk without having anything installed on your system. Frankly, I can't think of anything worse you could do to a system than installing NSW. I use Ghost but that's it.

I used to be a fan of NSW in the days of W98 and Me but do not find any use for it under XP. Ghost is an excellent product but I have far fewer problems with Future Systems' Casper XP (http://www.fssdev.com). Their recently released version 3.0 is an excellent backup and cloning solution and now features an incremental backup option which really speeds things along. It runs within Windows so is not to everyone's taste but I've found it 100% reliable.

I don't know what happened, but the message was sent before I finished typing it.  I also downloaded  the newest version of LiveUpdate file lusetup.exe.  The procedures for installing these do not mention the uninstall, step 3, stated in your procedure.  I know that often "clean installs" are better.  Is this something that you have found to work best for NSW?

Thanks for your help.

I did not find the downloads NSW 2004 SP2 AND NU SP2.  However, I did find what I think are the correct ones, but I just want to make sure before I start this process.  I downloaded the updates for Norton Systems Works 2004 and Norton Utilities 2004.  These are files NSW211.EXE and NU211.EXE.  I

NSW211.EXE and NU211.EXE are the correct files ( found here).  You can go ahead and uninstall LiveUpdate as part of step 3 (if you want). The LiveUpdate patch is going to do that for you anyway - when you run it.

Is this something that you have found to work best for NSW?

See the middle portion of the link I provided about avoiding the red X messages.

Thanks for the guidance.  I have completed all your recommendations and everthing seems to be working well.  Also, I finally fixed the error message problem.  In the msconfig service tab window the recycle bin "UnErase Wizard" block was checked.  However, after the reinstallation it was not checked in the NSW Options.  After checking the block in the options, the error message no longer appears on startup.  Don't know how that is related to the Norton Protect error message "Access Denied to drive C, but I tried it several times and every time you have one of those UnErase block checked and not the other, you will get that message.
