wkdetect

I also have the same problem! I have removed wkdetect.exe a dozen time from msconfig & regedit & it still comes back! I have emailed & called Dell support & NO one knows the answer! I have disabled the auto update in all works programs & cannot find the file in the works folder.

I am getting ready to delete the entire works program, it is such a pain. Does someone know how to remove this file?

Works is not the only MS program that uses wkdetect.exe. Picture It! also uses it. You can try disabling the auto updater in both programs. I have the updater disabled in Works and Picture It!, and have unchecked wkdetect in msconfig, but if I start either program it becomes enabled again. It used to bug me until I figured out where it was coming from. I use both programs, and wkdetect.exe does not seem to have any significant impact my system resources, so I no longer worry about it.

I noticed my last response was empty. Sorry, I don't know what happened. What I said was that I have unchecked all programs from auto update & it still didn't work! Each time I boot up that pesky file is there again. I don't want to settle for "I have to ignore it". It should be able to be removed. I ran a search in XP (Hidden files also) & it doesn't even appear in the directory. ?? I have been able to remove successfully so many other startup things like this, but not this 1.

Disable this item by clearing the Check for updates online in Tools Options in Microsoft PictureIt and, possibly, some of the other Microsoft Works programs.  Then, try disabling it in Startup Manager .

Where do I find the startup manager? Thanks.

That would be found by clicking Start>Run>type MSCONFIG>Click OK. Then click on the Startup tab.

I understand that you have gone the MSCONFIG route. What I mentioned was going into the programs themselves first and disable the check for updates online, then go to MSCONFIG.

Thanks, but I have done all that numerous times & removed the file from the registry also. Nothing works, it keeps coming back!

Thanks Pam, I undersood what you meant, but I did all that a few times. It keeps coming back. So something is starting up when I boot up causing this to go back, I just can't figure out what it is. I went to Encarta, Picture it & the customize page & disabled all.

Have you tried removing the checkmarks from :

wkcalrem

wkfud

WksSb

WkUFind

Maybe one of these is causing WKDetect to re-enable itself.

Yep! i only have 8 items in startup, firewall, antivirus & a few that i want to start. I removed all of them to check it & none were the culprit.

Well I finally got rid of it! I uninstalled WORKS & than went into the registry & revoved the keys. I did keep Encarta & Street Maps from the suite though & they work fine. NO MORE wkdetect!
